Hi, just wondering if anyone has replaced the back-up battery pack on a stinger 310 alarm?
I noticed the replacement 4.8 volt Nickel Metal Hydride battery pack on the Sargent website is £42, but they are available MUCH cheaper elsewhere to the same spec.
I've asked Sargent tech support but obviously they just say that they recommend the one they sell.
Has anyone used one of the cheaper ones?

As long as it is the same physical size to fit in unit I would buy one at a quarter of the price,but you may have to change the connectors.
If you look on the bbl batteries on line Yuasa battery site which is the brand Sargent use it does give you dimensions

Thanks for the reply, according to Sargent tech support as long as i match the spec i should be ok. The only issue I have is that they say it should be a 9ah battery.
Am i right in thinking this relates to how long the battery will hold a charge?
And if so, would it be dangerous to fit a battery with a lower ah value?

A lower ah should be OK charging as charger will cut out when full but it will only last half the time before it recharges again from the caravan battery.As long as you van battery is good if not connected to mains I see no problem.

Just avoid cheap no name battery cells. You want branded cells from a reputable source.

So many fake batteries out there.

You want to match the voltage and Ah rating as much as possible. If you use a lower Ah battery it will run down more quickly.

There are companies that advertise in the Radio Control mags that can build battery packs for you, if there isnt one off the shelf.

4.8v shouldnt be a problem though.

Replacing the battery on the 310 is easy. The sequence is that you charge the caravan leisure battery either at home, or via a solar panel. The leisure battery in turn keeps the alarm battery topped up. However the latter can run in stand alone mode for some months, as the alarm current draw is negligible, so there is no need to panic if you have to take the leisure home to re-charge.

I've decided not to bother replacing the back-up battery as we store the van on the driveway, and we always use electric hook-up when on site.
I leave the hook up switched-on permanently on the driveway and have done since November.
I know there's been some debate about doing this in another thread but I've had no issues with the caravan battery overheating.

I think that's a rather short sighted view, given you are talking about £30 odd to replace the battery which is a really easy job to do. I have you checked what your insurance company's view is?

£42.82 actually, which some people may consider a significant amount for something which only ever kicks-in when the caravan battery is allowed to go flat and even then it takes weeks for the back-up to also run flat (and the itermittent beep to start).
The only reason i noticed this was because i'd been using the motor mover prior to 'wintering' the van, and had forgotten to put the battery on charge afterwards.
My insurance company have said that the alarm must be armed when the caravan is unoccupied.
Should I decide to put the caravan in storage in future, then clearly I should replace the back-up battery.

Not wishing to labour this, but out of technical interest, if the alarm battery is shot, does the alarm actually work ok given that it is designed to run at a different voltage from the leisure battery?
