We have been caravanning for 44 years and have always taken TV with us.We always keep the original box and polystyrene packing to put it in when travelling and have never ever had a problem.Presently have an LG 22inch flat screen with HD.

Personally, I would not pay more than about £100,from somewhere like Argos. If you are going to run it on 12v, then you will have to get one which will do that.
When we travel, our tv is laid, screen down on the fixed bed.
If you do not have a fixed bed, put it screen down on a seat cushion and secure it with a bungie or something.
There are some TV's in Caravan mags for £300-£400, which are HD, Freeview, Freesat etc, depends what you need.

On the question of being robust I can't see that as a problem unless it is intended to leave the TV fixed to a bracket whilst travelling. Bags for Everything sell a padded bag which would protect the TV whilst travelling on a bunk/bed in the van.
