Hi all, I really hope someone can help me, I'm a first time caravan owner, I have a 97 fleetwood garland. I have it in my garden and when we have visitors I hook up to the mains and everything normally works fine. Last week I hooked up and noticed that none of the internal lights worked. I have gone through checking forums online and have conducted quite a few checks based on the advice I have found but now I am stuck!!!!
All fuses appear ok.
230 systems appear ok - as all of the sockets work.
I have power to my water heater but the pump does not run. The Pump is ok as I have checked this independently.
I have power to my fridge from MHU.
I have connected up a known good battery and this had no effect, (when on MHU I see zero charge going to the battery connections), still no internal lights or water pump.
12 volt systems just appear to be dead, even with a known good battery connected - and I've tried all the switches is every combination I could think of to be sure I wasn't just having a brain fade moment!
My thoughts are now turning towards a possible power distribution panel fault but none of the trips appear to be faulty and reset ok if I manually test them.

Please help if you can, any advice would be gratefully received and appreciated.

have you charged the battery at least overnight and then checked the voltage with a meter on the terminals? what does that say? if around 14 volts then its good, if its down to 12.5 its dead

power to the water heater? that is mains powered so is the fridge, so nothing to do with it, the water pump not working again that's a dead battery possibility

The battery I tried is 100% good, also the internal lights etc used to run without a battery connected at all, which is further adding to my confusion!??!

Problem could be faulty transformer/charger unit. It is obviously not charging battery & it should work the 12v circuit with no battery connected which you say it is not. New caravan transformer/charger unit is around £100. diy fit if you can do electrical work.

Hi

Does it have a manual switch to change between caravan and car for the 12v supply? If it does it might have been knocked to the car position which would stop your 12v powered items working from the leisure battery / charger.

You can also check the output from the charger to see if you are getting 12 - 14 volts. No voltage or low voltage would indicate a faulty charger.

As it doesn't work with a battery connected it might be that a fuse has gone between the battery and the 12v distribution. This could be at a fuse box or may be an inline fuse on the positive cable from the battery.

Wow! Really amazed at these quick responses, the caravan/camping world is living up to its good community reputation yet again 😀 👍

My gut is telling me it's a charger/transformer fault, my next issue is how do I identify a suitable replacement? Does anyone have any recommended suppliers that wouldn't mind a bit of a conversation prior to purchase?

We had an Abbey GTS many years ago(lovely vans). It lost all 12V once.
After much searching I found a line fuse which had blown. It was shown on the circuit diagram but finding its location was fun!
Eventually found it under some trunking under front seat.
It was swapped -sorted!
Always known as the secret Abbey fuse afterwards! ( I did put its location in the book!)
You may have the same thing.

No problem.

It might be worth checking whether the charger has any fuses in it that you can change before you shell out for a new one. I think some chargers also had a problem with the mains lead pulling out. Nothing to lose checking it over if you've got to take it out anyway.

Just had a look at the link (thanks for that by the way) and the unit looks very different to what I currently have in the van, am I able to upload pictures on here?

You can post up pictures by clicking the yellow square by the smilie & pasting in the internet link for the picture so you will need to have pics on a photo hosting site. There are plenty of different makes of transformer/charger but they all do the same thing.

Note to all,,,,,
I have managed to change out the charger, little bit of tinkering required to accommodate the older van wiring but no great stress. Pioneer caravans in Peterborough sold me a unit for 80 quid and threw in the electrical connectors I needed as well for free! They were happy to spend time with me talking through the process. Job done! All systems back up and running. Thank you all for your help.
