Hi

Was quoted £140 for replacing tyres on caravan by our storage centre. Who also went on about steel bands and not using unsuitable tyres.

Have called a local fitting centre, who have quoted me £85 for the same, assuring the tyres are suitable for caravans (they are 8ply?).

What questions do I need to ask? Judging by the companies (Eden Tyre Services - always had decent service from them with car tyres) they do much cheaper car tyres, so it's not a budget car tyre they are offering. Are van tyres suitable? Do I need 'steel bands' (this is what my storage place told me to get).

If it's a single axle caravan they need to have commercial van tyres fitted because they are designed and constructed to carry heavier weights which is paramount only having two wheels. If it's a twin axle caravan then standard car tyres can be fitted because the weight is distributed over two axles. If you tell the tyre fitter you need commercial tyres for a single axle caravan they will know what ply rating the tyres should be.
Tyron bands can be fitted but some tyre fiiting companies will refuse to change the tyres because they are more time consuming removing the tyre from the rim.

You need to understand what your caravan tyre requirements are & not rely on fitters to tell you. That way you can shop around for best deal yourself.

If you have a single axle caravan much over a tonne you will need commercial van tyres which will be 8ply to allow sufficient load rating. Look on the side of tyre it might read 185/80X14C. The C is for commercial which is what you need to look for.

£85 for a pair of tyres is reasonable so I would go with the fitter you know & trust. For that price they are probably budget or mid range but ok on a caravan. If want premium brand your fitter can supply but cost will be more.

I wouldn't bother with the Tyron bands. Provided your tyres are new, correct load rating & changed after 5yrs then they are not likely to fail on the road.

Also ensure wheels are balanced but a proper fitting depot should balance as a matter of course.

If you want to shop around for best deal read size off your tyres & try Tyre-shopper website. I find they are usually the cheapest. Owned by National Tyres & fitting done at an N/T depot of your choice.

Many thanks - I know they said they are 8ply, so I'll double check to make sure they have the 'c' after the size.

I would start by finding out what the correct tyres are for your caravan and then get prices for them. You need to check that the tyres you are being offered are the correct load rating for the weight of the caravan.

I always suggest people have a look at the E-Tyres website as they have a page dedicated to caravan tyres. Even if you don't buy from them its worth a look. The last time I put new tyres on a caravan I went for Bridgestones which were reinforced 8 ply commercial tyres and had a good load margin. They were not cheap but as I did a lot of Continental towing I wanted a decent set of boots on the caravan.

Correct advice. The load rating is everything. Don't be sold Van/Caravan/Re-inforced tyres as you don'tneed them. Their robust construction means the sidewalls flex less, so the harder ride is not kind to your van.
