Hi guys, hope someone can help me. 5 year old mover, speed reduced to absolute crawl, just about to stop on me. I've new battery in van 2 months ago, new batteries in hand set. Removed both motors, cleaned carbon brushes & all connections, brushes like new 24mm length of carbon. I have 12.9v at the control unit. Find it odd for both motors to reduce speed at same time. I'm looking for something that's common to both. Any ideas or tips would be very much appreciated

The battery.

Your checking the voltage off load. But what is the voltage with just the right mover on the go and the same with just the left mover powered and then the voltage with both on the go.

You want to take the voltage when its moving at full speed not the soft start if it has one. About 3 seconds on full power.

Measure the voltage right at the battery and if you can at the motor terminals.

Hi Grampian91,

I take you point, at the moment I have the battery on a 48hr charge, once complete I will follow your procedure. Would you agree with me that I can take the voltage from inside the van at the output terminals of the control unit to the motors, would let me take reading off & on load ?

My son can operate the hand set & engage & disengage as required.
Regards Alistair

I had this problem, battery fully charged.I got inside van with multimeter on the control box input terminals.Read 12.6 volts. Wife outside operated the van to move with me still inside and voltage dropped to 6 volts.I found it to be the isolator switch not making good contact.Replaced it and problem gone.

yep as birdman said, the voltage drop doesnt automatically mean its the battery. The voltage at the battery may stay fairly high, but when checking at the motor it drops.

You would then work your way back in each step to see where the voltage drops.

Hi guys, got the following readings

Isolating sw. readings were a bit erratic, undone connections, cleaned & reconnected, readings now consistent

Battery 13.2v
Isolating sw. in 13.2v & 13.2v out

Controller in 12.4v both motors running off load
Controller out 12.4v both motors running off load

At the spade connections on motors, both motors running off load 12.1v

Both rollers engaged on load & readings at spade connections at motors
Both motors 11.5v on the flat on my driveway
10.4v on slight incline
9.8v on steeper incline

It's definitely running slightly quicker & doesn't look as it would stop on me, took it up/down drive twice

Another point the battery is category 'C' 110Ah. type, the van is always on mains at side of house & we always use hook up's on site.

Thanks for your help, any comment from you will be most welcome.

Regards Alistair

Your battery is very weak. The standing voltage is high but when under load the cells in the battery do not have enough reserve energy.

Below 12v is actually flat, but short spells under whilst under heavy load would be OK, Below 11v though is too low.

Dont leave the battery charger on the van connected 24/7. That only partially charges the battery to prevent it gassing off.

A proper charge with a decent exterior charger is worthwhile, it will extend the batteries life.

Checked the fluid level in the battery lately?

Hi Grampian91
I understand what you are saying & I agree with you, even on the flat running at 11.5v not good enough

The 48hr charge was with an external charger in my garage, not the van charger

Have not checked fluid level as this is a new battery
which was supposedly ready to go & fully charged, I will check

I think I've bought the wrong battery, cat C is a lower capacity battery. I paid £80, less than 2 months, only get what you pay for.

Should have paid the £165 for cat A, high storage battery, which is what local van dealer sells

P.S. I connected 2 crocodile clips onto motor on end of 1.5mm x 1mtr cable with plastic terminal block at other end with the small screws securing the probes of the m/meter, this let me walk at the side of the van while the wife used the handset & I get the readings

I'll keep you posted, you help & knowledge is very much appreciated

Regards Alistair

I do the same. I tend to buy the cheaper batteries because they spend most of the time on hookup or in storage.

rarely do we use more than 20% of its capacity. But they dont last anywhere near as long as they should.

I had a fairly new leisure battery and ran it with a 600w inverter and a 100w lightbulb on it, actually pulling about 140 watts, the leisure battery had a noticeable voltage drop but the better brand but lower capacity car battery held its voltage much longer.

Seems the get what you pay for may well apply here.
But in general use for lights etc it will last quite a while.

Hi guys, eventually got new Cat A battery, dealer exchanged the Cat C plus the cash difference

Charged for 48 hrs. 13.2v

Both motors disengaged 12.4v at motor spade connections

Van running on flat, both motors engaged 12.1v

Van on steepest gradient of driveway dropping to 10.3v

I stopped van on steepest part of gradient, restarted from a standing start with no problem.

Van running back on flat both motors engaged 12.1v

I certainly have the confidence that it is more or less running as it should, the way it was the last few years & certainly doesn't look as it is about to stop on me

I think new Cat A battery, motor brushes & connections cleaning, an accumulation of these items may well have helped
