Hi,

I have taken ownership of a Rapido Confort today and have been advised by the owner that they 'require a special size towball'
Is this something that anyone can assist with? Is it just a long neck Alko type or are we talking about something that is not a 50mm ball?
Unfortunately the current owner no longer has a towbar fitted and mine isn't due to arrive 'till after the weekend!

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

I believe that many years ago in the UK they did manufacture an imperial sized towball which was 2 inches in diameter before it was superseded by the common metric 50mm. towball. If that is the case that your hitch is for a 2 inch towball then it would be advisable just to change the hitch to a standard 50mm. type providing that the mounting holes are identical.

Hi Tango 55,

Thank you for your reply. The trailer is from the early 80's and so must have had the trailer hitch replaced at some point in its life. Having done some digging and from what I can see, an Imperial (2") hitch will fit a 50mm ball safely but not the other way round - so I should be ok either way.
Thank you again!

I've got a 1980 Export & a 1984 Confort T & never had any issues with hitching up so I think you should be fine.

Check the markings in the hitch or post up some closeup and in focus pictures to your gallery on here or to tinypic or similar website.

Thank you for your replies. My intention is to spend some time with the unit this weekend (it is several miles from home) to see if I can couple to it or replace the hitch on the trailer. I will update with results!

Have also recently required a rapido confortmatic and experiencing same issue. Think that a smaller 1 7/8" ball is required and cannot find anywhere to pick one up on a Saturday- even scrap yard which I was advised was best bet. Disappointed as meant to be away for first night tonight!

Turns out that the hitch on the trailer is metric (50mm) as you would expect from a French product. The actual problem was a sticking lock mechanism preventing the release hand lifting all the way - the previous owner had never noticed! Thank you all for your replies and enjoy the season!
