Hi Guys,

I have a little vintage Bailey Maru caravan, I think its about a 1960's.

I cleaned it yesterday and all the paint seems to be going powdery and coming off when I wash it now. The roof has gone streaky where the aluminum/metal is coming through so it needs some attention.

Has anyone had any experience of painting their caravan? Any tips or advice on what to use i.e brush or roller? I don't really want to spray its not so easy to control where it goes.
Also any paints that people would recommend?

I have an issue in that I don't really have anywhere to put it while I paint it either. I keep my caravan on a storage site. Any tips for painting it there or anywhere that might allow me to take the caravan and work on it?

Thank you

My elderly (vintage!) caravan does the same when it's washed.. so I will be watching this thread with interest!

I did think about 'car wrapping' it at one point. Or paying someone to spray or paint it for me as I couldn't do it myself.

Aw not good.

I have only had my Caravan two years in December & when I clean it the paint has come off a little but never to this extent. It really worried me when I saw how much came off.
It probably looks worse now it is clean than it did before as so much paint has come off of the roof.

I thought about getting it wrapped also, there is also something called ‘Plastidip’ which is basically a spray on paint which you can peel off if you want to. But I read up a little on it last night after cleaning the caravan and some people have said it wouldn’t be a good finish or it wouldn’t last on a caravan. So I don’t really know what to do.

I am hoping it is something I can do myself.

I know! But equally its all part of the fun hehe

Whatever you decide to paint it with, you will need an "Etch Primer" first, as the surface is aluminium.

Using a coach enamal whether by brush or foam roller can do fantastic results.I did a transit van in it and it looked like brand new when i applied it with a roller. You can get it here although there are other places..Click

Thanks guys!

With the primer will I need to apply a few coats before applying the paint? Or is it literally just one coat then paint?

Perfect thank you I will take a look on the website.

I am thinking maybe paint all over with a roller and do the small bits/corners with a brush. Hopefully it wont show up different?

I ideally want to do a classic white/old white over the caravan & paint the top and bottom in a really light/pale blue on both sides.

I did think about painting the trims with Chrome paint but didn't know if it will look tacky?

Has anyone had experience with Chrome paint?

Was thinking of doing things like trims, handles etc with a chrome paint.

Thanks for all the help guys

I have had a quote from a caravan restoration company saying it will be a minimum of £2,500 + VAT if the caravan is in top condition and the frame is sound when they remove the shell from the chassis.
+ the cost of repairs for anything that goes wrong such as rebuild the frame and replacing seals..

So I will 100% try and paint it myself.

Etch primer will just need one coat, then you could follow that with a coat of undercoat, but check what it says on the Etch Primer tin.

You need to strip it back to bare metal, then the etch primer. You can get high build etch primers that give a thicker coat which can be used to hide small blemishes.

If you try painting over the powdery paint it will peel quite quickly.

My old 70's sprite also had the powdery paint issue. I just washed it and waxed it with a good brand of car polish.

Nothing special just well known brands that were on offer at the time.

Ok perfect, I will get some Etch primer first

I am dreading stripping it back to metal. Worried I will scratch it or something and damage it.
Fingers crossed.

I use caravan cleaner on it, I had a set of fenwicks caravan cleaner & then brought Autoglym Caravan & Motorhome cleaner. It seems to have just got worse using these.
I wasn't sure if maybe the solutions are too strong for the paint to handle which is why it came off?
The Autoglym seems to have done more damage than the Fenwicks cleaner.

I will have to do the paint job outdoors... Will the weather make a difference? Like, if I were to paint on a sunny hot day would this have a negative affect on the finish/paint?

If you use fine grade wet and dry paper with water it will key the surface .A coarse grade paper will scratch.
