Hi, So I bought an old caravan ('92 we think) Got it to a site and mains hookup was working fine, reading lamps and pump all ran off mains. Bought new 100amp leisure battery, connected (wrongly I think, saw spark) couldn't tell if it was working as nothing seemed to change. Disconnected it and tried mains - mains not working at all now. But - re-connect battery and mains all working? How and what the ruddy hell is going on please help.
Can you be sure that it was the mains circuits that were working when you first tried it and after you reconnected the battery - did you try any appliances plugged into the mains sockets, for instance?
Reason I ask is I would have expected the water pump and at least some of the lights to be running on 12v supplied by the battery, which would explain why they were only working with the battery connected.
Was the battery replaced because of poor performance?
If so, it might have been because it wasn't being charged due to a fault on the EHU lead or a fault (or tripped circuit breaker or incorrect switch position) on the consumer unit or transformer/charger?
I'm sure - I plugged fairy lights into the socket and they worked anyway. New battery as caravan didn't come with one so just getting things up and running.. Thanks for helping :)
Age of caravan this might help Vin Number
Puzzled re the battery connection and mains, usually if no mains you look for EHU problem, EHU lead (maybe loose connections) socket on caravan for incoming mains, RCD or MCB's including wiring behind the control panel.
When battery disconnected does the rcd test switch work, when connected does the RCD test switch work.
