Afternoon all,
We are at present travelling back from the Vendee in France and for the first time have had a good enough signal to get on the forum properly!
We arrived in France ten days ago to find that the fridge after twenty four hours on hook up was not as cold as it should be, roughly eight degrees and was approximately two thirds full with plenty of space for air movement. The outside temperature was in the mid twenties at the time.
We had a similar problem previously while away and I found the earthing cable on the top of the thermostat/gas control had worked loose and after re-attaching it the problem was solved. On this occasion the connection was fine.
I thought that possibly the 240v element had failed but the confusing thing was that the freezer remained hard frozen all week in temperatures of 35°c. My second thought was that the thermostat had failed but after wiring out the control knob no difference was made.
The unit was producing heat from the "chimney" as I would expect.
The unit is a rm6270, and works fine on gas plus it was cooling as I would expect before we left the UK.
Any help would be really appreciated.

Two possible reasons for the electric, possible voltage drop depends on the site supply. Also adsorption fridges will probably only bring down around 17 degrees below the ambient temperature. I tend to run my fridge on gas in warmer climes than the uk. Have you tried removing the fridge vent?

Yes, had the fridge vents off all week and it appeared to make little difference.
We used it last year on electric in similar temperatures and it coped fine, even to the extent of having to alter the thermostat to stop things freezing.
Would the freezer still stay hard frozen if it was struggling? We ended up using it to freeze cool blocks to keep the fridge cold what got us by for the week.
Its a bit of a head scratcher!

Is the control set high - this would could make the freezer keep frozen? In Germany a few years ago I bought an electric fan to blow through the bottom vent - it was very hot - it helped to an extent but not a total success. When we returned to the UK the fridge worked fine. To me it looks like voltage drop could be the problem.

I actually wired out the thermostat so that the fridge was constantly on, ie not being regulated by it.
It has been the same at three different campsites so not sure if it could be a voltage issue or not. The site owner put a volt meter over the supply to the element and said that all was as it should be. He suggested it could be a gassing issue and suggested removing the fridge and rotating it half a dozen times to remix the gasses.
Keep the ideas coming Geoff48, they are being added to the list of things to try before taking a hammer to it

Running out of ideas, you have heat at the heat exchanger so you may have an airlock but I feel that this is maybe clutching at straws especially as its working fine on gas. Did you by chance see what the voltage figure was, should be 230 with a 10% variance, according to the caravan club voltage of less than 190 does adversely affect the running of the fridge. I suppose it could be a faulty 125w heating element?

I didn't see his volt meter, he only informed me that it was getting 240v. I will pull the fridge out when we get home and get it running on the workbench and check all the variables.

We in UK have always had a 240volt supply which used to have a tolerance of plus or minus 6%.

When we got harmonised to 230 volts we actually stayed the same. All they did was change the tolerance to plus 10% to -6%.

Some electrical equipment is voltage dependent and heating elements are one of these along with light bulbs. So we still have 240volt kit while our friends abroad have 230volt kit.

Just this week we have had similar issues with our fridge, it works perfectly on gas even forms ice in the freezer but not on 240v it's never been tested on 12v as our tow vehicle doesn't support this, I'm now that thinking that the thermostat needs replacing but having searched for new thermostats on eBay I've remembered whilst replacing our sink and removing the whole worktop I moved the wire coming from the thermostat so wondering if I've broken or disconnected it some how does anybody know what this wire/cable should be attached to? Or how I can test the thermostat itself to assertion if it is indeed broken
??

If there's warmth coming from the top vent outside the thermostat is ok.
By the wire coming from the thermostat, do you mean the phial? The phial should be clamped onto the evaporator inside.

By the way our fridge is the same, OK in UK but get to about 25c ambient temp and the fridge really struggles to work, freezer is always ok. Had a new cooling unit last year, made no difference. They are just $hit

I'm not sure what it's called , I'll go with you and call it the Phial so yes that's the wire I was referring to, where is the evaporator

The evaporator is the fins inside, there should be a little clamp to put it in. While you were typing I was editing my above post with my experience of these fridges.
