Hi, I am thinking of doing a reseal on my caravan which is 30 years old & showing signs of damp, it's a two birth ABI Jubilee Diplomat. Looking at the awning rail (I haven't removed it yet) there is a rubber seal that goes between the rail & the van with no sign of any sealant, I was wondering before I start to remove the rail if anyone has come across this type of rail & does it need sealant or does the rubber act as a seal?
This is not the trim that hides the awning rail screws by the way!

There is sealant under the rubber seal. The way to proceed is to remove screws, remove awning rail & seal. Clean off old sealant then put back together using sealant strip under rubber seal. Or use suitable sealant from a cartridge.

All that sounds simple but you have to remove rail which my be difficult without damaging it. Then screws have got to screw back in which they won’t if wood underneath is rotten. A 30yr old caravan is best bodged ime. Don’t remove anything. Clean the rail up with meths & run PU sealant around in & into any gaps. Thats an awful lot quicker & easier.

If your gonna take off the rail make sure you get new screw nails of the same your taking out as some you wont get out and nothing worse starting a job when you dont have the materials and stopping to go and get some thing

Well worth getting longer screws in the hope of finding a good bit of wood or even fit them at an angle to get a better grip.
Mastic tape on the rail then loose mastic. With a blob on the screw heads.
