Hi, I’m a newbie to the whole caravan world and just recently bought a caravan, I have a carver cascade water heater built in and having an issue with getting it to work on gas. I am getting a spark but no gas coming through? I have tried it on electric and I get a lot of air coming through but no water. Could any of you guys help? The caravan has been left for 18months and has slight damp near the water heater.
I assume everything else works on gas? Have you checked the drain screw on the outside of the caravan? If its not been tightened up it could be taking in air. Another thing to check is if there is a gas valve, usually under the cooker, has it been turned off? The usual problem with Cascades is that the don't heat on electric because the cut off switch has been activated.
Saying that every thing else is working on gas like the cooker would be of help.If your cooker aint working i would change the regulator on the gas bottle.
Sorry for late reply I’ve been sealing the caravan. Yes everything else works on gas (cooker and fire), I have followed the gas pipe all the way to the bottle and there isn’t a shut off valve which I find strange. I disconnect the regulator when I towed it so maybe air could be in the system through that way? Wouldn’t the air pass through with the gas? But in saying that the cooker and fire is working
Make sure that your leisure battery is fully charged as this is the source of the ignition. If the battery is partly discharged it will provide a weak spark thus creating a problem igniting after several attempts.
There shouls be a brown control box with 3 lights on which are red, amber and green. The green illuminates when the gas is coming through and the ignition has lighted. If it's amber it means there gas available but has air in the system that need to be expelled before igniting. The red means complete power failure so have you checked which of the 3 lights are illuminating?
You say you are getting no water? I would sort that problem first, as it's not a good idea to try heating with no water coming through. I'm not sure of this but maybe there is a cut-out that prevents the gas coming through if there is no water in the system?
It does take some time for water to get through to the hot tap when you first fill the water heater. The hot tank holds a lot of air when it has been drained.
I have tried it off generator, I have water coming through the cold taps just not be hot, I have bought a new leisure battery now so will try it tomorrow and leave it for a while to see if the water comes though the hot, the green light comes on constant but after around 10-20 seconds the red light comes on where the gas symbol is
I have been down today and sealed the whole caravan and left the heating on for a few hours to try and dry it out abit, I’m hoping that it may have dried any damp connections on the water heater
I have just took the burner unit out and the 4 pin plug looks ok and there is gas coming through without the unit in so I know there isn’t a blockage, I’m guessing the solenoid is knackered?
Water should come out of the hot taps whether the heating is working or not. When the hot tank has been drained for the winter there will be a lot of air to get out of the system before water comes out of the taps. I usually find when I first fill the hot tank up at the beginning of the season I have to open both the hot taps then keep opening and closing the kitchen cold tap a few times to "encourage" the water to flow. Once I have cold water flowing smoothly from the hot taps I switch on the water heating. It's fine then for the rest of the season.
Having problems with mine now. Water appears to be going into the hot tank, but nothing is coming out. I have disconnected the heater tank outlet hose but nothing comes out when I run the pump. Cold water flows fine to the taps, and the hot tank appears to be filling, as water comes out when I unscrew the drain plug. The system was completely drained over winter until today. Are there any valves inside that could have stuck? I can't see why there would be.
Only other option I can think of is that the pump isn't powerful enough. It worked last year, but the flow is not as good as in my last caravan.
It could be that the non return valve has stuck as it's a common problem on the Carver Cascade MKII hot water tank. The hose is actually connected to the non return valve which is screwed into the tank itself directly behind the drain plug but can't remember if that's the hot or cold supply. Have you got any back pressure at the water inlet housing at all as that's a sign of the non return valve jammed shut?
If the valve is jammed open then you have problems with the system pressurising which the pump usually runs continuous and jammed closed usually causes back pressure.
