Please can anybody help me. I have an old Bailey Ranger approximately 1997. I have gone to plug-in the water pump but when I put the taps on it's not running I don't have a leisure battery and running the electrics off electric hook up so only have two lights and the television working. The pump was working perfectly fine last time I used it I have tapped it I have cleaned it and Also used some fine sandpaper on the connections but nothing. Please has anyone any suggestions?
Not using a battery in circuit is a recipe for disaster. The pump is operated by 12 volt power with a fuse in the circuit for protection so you need a battery to run the components very much the same as a car. It maybe okay on modern caravans not to install a battery but on a 1997 model I would expect some severe problems not to mention it being a fire risk.
Omg really!! The pump usually works with the electric hook up. Maybe I had best get a battery. Is there a switch I need to put on to operate it, I thought I just plugged in in outside and it worked?
Sorry I'm quite new to caravanning on my own
Obviously no lights come on on the Control Panel because as it's not connected to a car or leisure battery
My guess it that the two lights which work are the two in the front corners of the van. If so, they are mains powered not battery powered.
Similarly the TV could well be mains powered. If that's all the case it sounds like you have no 12 volt at all.
We had a 1999 Ranger which maybe slightly different. There were, I think, 2 small switches on top of the mains panel. They were on their side. One switched the 12 volt on and off and the other switched the pump on and off.
If you didn't know they were there you might well miss them. There should be a little door on the front of the nearside front seat box. The panel is in there.
Thank you tango for your reply, I'll get a battery but can't understand why it's worked before without any problems on the hook up before. I guess it's the pump that's died over the winter. Any other suggestions?
Thank you Navva. Unfortunately the caravan must be a little different to yours because there are no switches under the seats And nothing to switch it from 12v to 6v unless there is something somewhere I'm missing, i've always just connected the electric to the hook up and off I go but it's not working so I think it might be the pump?
There will be 2 rocker switches, one with a gauge showing the condition of the battery which won't work if you have no battery in circuit. The second rocker switch will have a little red or green light next to it which illuminates when the pump is activated. However, having no battery connected then there is no 12 volt power to operate the pump so if you was only using 240 volts direct from the mains it could have burned out the charger that supplies power to the battery.
We have now connected a leisure battery and the pump worked fine but it seems to have gone off again and the battery panel isn't registering and when we switch it on and off you get a Flickr on the lights but nothing more does anybody have any idea could it just be the switch did work with me first connected the battery but now we've put the battery in the compartment and locked it up it's not working
I wouldn't worry about getting a fire its not likely to happen unless you maybe touched the battery terminals together whilst connected to the mains. I think you have got the van set to 12v and have now flattened the new battery that's why nothing is working again, there must be the switch there somewhere once you have found it set to 240v have the battery in position and make sure the charger is on
------------- its our imperfections that makes us perfect
Picking up a few clues here. Having read and commented on your other post, it seems like you may have burnt out the charger by running it without a battery. On these older vans they are not designed to work like that.
