I'm allowed to work from home, which I reckon means I can work from a Caravan too. But I have some commercially sensitive documents I need to keep secure in order to be able to do this. So I was thinking of screwing a ground anchor to the Caravan floor (like the ones motor bikers use). Is a Caravan floor just plywood and foam, if I screwed an anchor point the the floor using security screws(turn clockwise only so you can’t unscrew) would that be sufficient to hold it in place, or is screwing anything into foam pointless ? No point having a secure attachment to an anchor point you can just pull out. What’s the best way of attaching something securely to the floor? (It does not have to stand up to a sledgehammer or anything just be something you cannt pull out with your hands or kick in with a big size 10) attaching to the wood bed frames for instance wouldn’t do. Maybe a bolt all the way through would be better, but not sure I have the tools to do that. Anyone any ideas?

I would think the floor itself would be much too flimsy to screw into. However, if you got a metal plate and put it below the floor and put bolts through the floor and through matching holes in the metal plate, that should work. You would need nothing more technical than a power drill to make the holes.

Yeah okay thanks. So a bit harder than just screws but as you say much sturdier. If I can’t get a metal plate I guess just wood would do, big surface area means can’t just pull through the floor?

Thick steel plate under the floor with domed bolts underneath or snapoff torque style bolts.

Sandwich the floor between the safe and steel plate. But if you can just cut around the steel plate then your work could be taken.

All this will add weight to the van also.

Not clear what object you are trying to secure?

There are plenty of gas drop vents under bunks, so if its a Bowden cable type of security, perhaps you could run this though one of those and utilise one of the holes in the chassis as a security point?

If someone is determined enough, anything can be overcome with the right tools, but the floor is always going to be a weak area. The trouble with safes is that they might as well have a label on saying 'the good stuff is here'! Sometimes better to locate one of the voids that exist in most vans somewhere and use that as an opportunistic won't know or see it.

I'd check with your employers that they agree, and the insurance, assuming it's possible to insure the documents?

Probably not a good idea to store any irreplaceable/sensitive documents in any unattended vehicle.

I wouldnt want any sensitive information stored in a caravan as caravans are easily stolen and the contents stays with the caravan
not so easy to tow a house away

Thanks for the replies. What’s a gas drop vent ? I have a lockable case with a steel wire that can loop round things, so looping it round anything metal attached to the bulk head would be fine. I just can’t find anything. I have bought a bike anchor with a steel plate that can be screwed under the floor with an Allen key, then a plate covers the Allen keys( and a dab of no more nails should keep it all permenately fixed)

A van can be towed but I have 2 wheel clamps and a lock over the tow bar, so they’d have be been fairly determined.

Just read the linked story about police, it’s nothing official like that, but yeah I certainly wouldn’t leave it in a car or anything that could actually be driven, I’m hoping a 1.5 tonne Caravan with 3 security devices is a tad safer than that.

If you have a new or newish caravan check that you wont be making your warranty void by drilling through the floor.
I think you would be better off just leaving a Rottweiler in there.

It’s well past it’s warranty. I've drilled pilot holes now but it just seems to be 2 sheets of plywood with a gap in the middle. I'm surprised it even takes my weight. Isn’t there meant to be foam in the middle or something ?

No Foam that I am aware of ... Just Ye Olde Plywood ... If you have ever seen a Caravan being constructed its scary ... there is not a lot to them..

If you look under the cooker,fridge,boiler or floor locker there will round vent holes perhaps 50mm across with a mesh cover. These are for ventilation and to allow any leaked gas to fall through. They are also handy to pass odd wires or tubes through, to save drilling any extra holes....
