Last year I replaced the multi pin plug that connects the van to the car. All appeared well.

However it has recently developed the habit of coming adrift in my hands as I attempt to connect it to the car. I'm assuming that the body is distorting and releasing the threads, but it could be I'm missing a trick and it's down to my incompetence!

Once connected it appears fine, tugging on the cable does not dislodge it and it remains securely in place while towing.

Any ideas on what I might have done wrong, or advice on the purchase of a decent connector?

Perhaps you did not assemble the plug correctly. There is a useful 'how to' guide here:

Thanks Chris, but, sadly, the fitting in the article is of a different design to mine. I've also looked at Youtube videos, but, again, a different configuration.

I've just tried to pull it apart, but it won't budge, so it's behaving itself at the moment. When it fails it takes very little effort, it just comes apart in my hands.

With a trip to France coming up I may buy another different type of 13 pin plug, hopefully with the green cover included.

Are there different variations of a 13 pin plug? Mine came apart once. I put the plug in the socket making sure I had the pins correct by checking lights etc, I then slid the collar over it and locked it with the flat bit at the top, it sort of had to be forced to turn but has never come apart since and works fine

I think that some designs have a locking tab, but mine does not. Nor does it feature the arrows mentioned online.

It so happened that when I replaced mine a few months back I bought a Menber plug, as per the link. I have to say it is excellent, and considerably easier to use that the Sargent plug fitted by Swift. I would certainly recommend it

Sounds as though it could be as simple as a missing retaining screw that holds the plug body together.
Bertie.
