So I have a 2001 compass rallye 530/4 and the damper is a bit worn now it’s not as strong as it should be anyway I bought all of the bits I thought I would require the other day all apart from the new damper itself as I needed to remove it to get part number off of it here is where I found the problem. I removed the hitch and the cowl on the aframe at the front of the van slackened the brake push rod off removed the bolts at each end of the damper. At this pont I could slide th damper up and down the over run tube but couldn’t remove it in either direction. I couldn’t see a clear obstruction in the tube so I’m now stuck for ideas. The only thing I can think of now is to remove the handbrake mechanisim off the hitch head but I can’t really see how it’s stopping the damper coming out. Anyway I gave up put all of the new batteries lt I bought in and torqued everything back up as required and called it a day as I couldn’t see how to get it out has anyone had a similar issue
There's a book available called 'The Caravan Manual' which is worth buying and keeping for future reference if you intend doing DIY tasks on a caravan. That's what I did and wouldn't attempt to undertake any job without finding out first what's involved, the procedure regarding any springs that need retaining and if any special tools are required.
The job it self is pretty straight forward I’ve looked through one of the manuals but it’s fairly generic I need to know more specifically for the damper/chassis type
