On our journey home today the vehicle in front had a major oil leak. We were sprayed with oil over the car and our caravan. We have managed to clean the car but the caravan is proving more stubborn.I have managed to clean some parts using Silky but it is taking ages. Anyone have any ideas as to what we can use to speed up the process.
Silky is a product for just polishing the surface. You need a product to remove the oil film first which WD40 is known to remove all sorts of stuff so try that and then polish the surface after the film of oil has been eliminated. The advice is not to use anything abrasive to avoid damaging the the finished surface sheen.
Try a small section first and see what the results are. If it works then do the rest but can't think of anything else better to use. Make sure you polish the areas afterwards though to remove any unwanted WD40 film.
Used T-Cut before with no ill effects after giving it a good lick of polish afterwards.
T-Cut is not the consistency it used to be, so you will be fine.
------------- XVI yes?
As well is two words!
How does a sage know everything about everything? or does he? or does he just think he does?
Remember, if you buy something you bought it, not brought it.
Hi all. Thanks for all your suggestions. After a marathon 8 hour cleaning session I have managed to remove virtually all the oil. I used a combination of T Cut and jet washing to remote the residue for most parts and a upvc cleaner and wd40 on other areas where the t cut didn't work. Thanks again.
You say the damage was caused by the car in front having a major oil leak. Do you have the registration number? If so will your insurance get the car insurance to pay for any damage to your caravan?
------------- We camped for years. In 2019 we bought an Elddis Avante 454. We like it as it is short (6.9m) and fits in our driveway and has a fixed bed.
We had 127 nights away in the caravan in 2023.
Hi john4703. It was a royal mail lorry but unfortunately we didn’t get the registration as we were backing off. I've been in touch with royal mail. They cannot identify the vehicle even though we had a time and location.. Putting it down to experience I'm afraid.
That is such a shame Chas. I hope you get it all clean

The caravan was enveloped with Royal Mail grime but you ended up with a first class finish!
