Recently I uncovered our 1989 Swift Corniche to check it over ready for a trip out in a week's time, only to find when I connected up, no lights came on. Returned to have another try. After spraying with WD40 and connecting, was met with confusing actions. Some lights 'pulsated' and some still did not work.
My brother who is pretty electrically orientated connected a multimeter to the 13 pin car plug and we found connection 7 with No. 3 (earth) produced 12+ volts. The others a mix of low readings or nothing. I have read a lot of suggestions about electrical faults being earthing problems, but don't thing this is the case. I went around all the connections and tightened all of them to ensure good contact.
At this juncture, I want to say that I bought the towbar from PF Jones and a dedicated wiring system for my 2012 Volvo XC 60. The wiring came with a Right Connections CAN-Bus Module which has a red and green light to indicate the state when connected to the van. We had a red light, but on connecting the van it stayed on red and never switched to green. My in-car information/warning system stated there were two messages, but I wasn't able to get further information. After an over-night break, there are no messages, which suggests that they were related to the connect-up to the van.
I currently am trying to locate a trailer board to test the car side of things.
If anyone has experienced similar, I would appreciate how they resolved it.
I have taken a quick look at the Right Connections website, but was unable to find if they do a spare replacement Module and time is running out if we are to go away as planned next weekend.
