Later, people used to add extra crock clips in the boot to charge the leisure battery ( or more likely old car battery) while out and about for the day.

Indeed they do! My first two caravans many years ago had gas lights, no electrics at all, and no running water - not even cold! Certainly no mains electricity, as most sites didn't have it anyway.
I fitted cold running water and a 12volt electrical system, and a charging system from the car using the then-unused blue wire from the 7 pin plug. I fitted a relay which was energised by the ignition supply and which fed a supply to the caravan battery while the engine was running, thus charging the caravan battery while I was on the move. This was all in the 1970s, and the caravans were a Sprite Alpine and Musketeer from the 1960s. We still enjoyed ourselves! 
As for noseweight, if it looked right, it was right.

We never took a telly with us, and we still don't. We have one we could take, but we just don't bother. Makes a change to get away from it once in a while. I think our battery was one for a large van, and it lived in the front in a box under a seat. We didn't use much electricity, mainly the water pump and one small strip light over the table. We used to move around more than we do today too, and the journey to our next campsite was enough to top the battery back up. We were even posher with our water, as I fitted a tank under one of the bunks along with a small electric pump. To get water at the sink you just turned the tap on and pressed a button.
One thing I do remember is that we always made sure we had plenty of spare mantles for the gas lamps, as they often broke when we moved off. Always replacing the darned things when we stopped next!
