I am going to Move the Battery into the caravan bed box, and redirect the cables.
I have 1 of these https://www.alpha-batteries.co.uk/accubox-deluxe-leisure-battery-box/?gclid=CjwKCAjwwo7cBRBwEiwAMEoXPMz75lY0i9n7CUaIk2lHL_iwaKBxhfVVKp86jF2fEsPW3ZWdljNawhoCVMUQAvD_BwE that I was going to put the Battery in front in.
But now will change that.
And will fit a whale inlet to the wall and alter it to put the solar charger leads to the battery. So I can remove and conect the leads when on a RaLly with no EHU.
And fit the pipe from the Battery to go out floor.
Then change and add other 12v parts like fittings to run a TV, More easy lol.

That sounds like a plan, toweasy. Let us know how you get on. Good to see these older caravans getting a new lease of life. I have a 1992 Wisp 450CT, it's a great van!

If you install a normal lead acid battery in a box inside the bed box it should be sealed so that it vents outside the habitation area to avoid the risk of an explosion if the battery is overcharged and releases Hydrogen gas.
The alternative is to use a Gel battery.

Hi and thanks guys.
I have put the battery into one of these
https://www.alpha-batteries.co.uk/accubox-deluxe-leisure-battery-box/?gclid=Cj0KCQiAtvPjBRDPARIsAJfZz0qT48WBMtEFfp4xkA6suR5B58L9jgqFJZSouNbxL3lTNr3glUmcBUoaAvjKEALw_wcB .

The battery is secure and vented and also separated from the Gas Cil.
Had a Caravan service done with it on with no probs, he did a full gas check in the locker as well.

How times change. I used to have an extension lead from the cars 7 pin socket to the van to run the light - not for too long mind..

Later, people used to add extra crock clips in the boot to charge the leisure battery ( or more likely old car battery) while out and about for the day.

And then the twin 6 Kg butane clamped on the A frame unlocked out in the open.

Noseweight? what was that? As long as the outfit didn't bend in the middle too much, that was ok

Indeed they do! My first two caravans many years ago had gas lights, no electrics at all, and no running water - not even cold! Certainly no mains electricity, as most sites didn't have it anyway.

I fitted cold running water and a 12volt electrical system, and a charging system from the car using the then-unused blue wire from the 7 pin plug. I fitted a relay which was energised by the ignition supply and which fed a supply to the caravan battery while the engine was running, thus charging the caravan battery while I was on the move. This was all in the 1970s, and the caravans were a Sprite Alpine and Musketeer from the 1960s. We still enjoyed ourselves!

As for noseweight, if it looked right, it was right.

Colin

mum and dad had a lunar clubman (green stripe) making it a 1974 caravan, towed by a ford cortina 1600e! gas lights fitted, but we where posh as we had a foot pump for water in the kitchen! did every rally going, we even had a black and white telly! dad fitted some 12volt power to the caravan and we would carry a spare car battery in the car, only to be used should the car not be able to start after using the the long lead, this never stopped us going away even for the 6 weeks of the holidays in the summer as all we had to do was leave the battery in a garage over night to recharge it

How did the gas lights stay lit when the Cortina was driving?

XVI yes?

As well is two words!
How does a sage know everything about everything? or does he? or does he just think he does?
Remember, if you buy something you bought it, not brought it.

We never took a telly with us, and we still don't. We have one we could take, but we just don't bother. Makes a change to get away from it once in a while. I think our battery was one for a large van, and it lived in the front in a box under a seat. We didn't use much electricity, mainly the water pump and one small strip light over the table. We used to move around more than we do today too, and the journey to our next campsite was enough to top the battery back up. We were even posher with our water, as I fitted a tank under one of the bunks along with a small electric pump. To get water at the sink you just turned the tap on and pressed a button.

One thing I do remember is that we always made sure we had plenty of spare mantles for the gas lamps, as they often broke when we moved off. Always replacing the darned things when we stopped next!

Colin
