Hi guys,
I am new to Caravanning, having upgraded from a 30 year old pennine Pullman! I have just bought a great Swift Challenger 530 (2007) but the closing disc in the thetford toilet has come loose and does not open or shut. I have tried to open the cassette copying what I have seen on you tube to see if I can repair but have not been successful. Has anyone got any tips or advice? Can I buy one new? How can I repair? Any advice greatly received!
The operating mechanism is probably worn as it's 11 years old now in which case a new tank will be required. The Thetford model of toilet is most likely a C-200 model on a 2007 caravan in which case a new tank will be around the 120 quid mark. I had to replace the Thetford waste tank 2 years ago due to the same problem but they also do a kit which comprises of a new toilet seat & lid including the tank for about a fiver less which might be well worth checking out to see if they still sell the replacement kit.
Many parts are replaceable on the Thetford cassette tank but the channel guide for the swivelling mechanism is moulded into the roof section which eventually wears over time making the flap loose so a new tank is the only option. However, if you do purchase a new tank I advise you to remove the filler cap, automatic vent valve, lip seal and any other removable parts and keep them as spares rather that dispose of the complete tank.
Once you know the Thetford model number you can Google it and look at the exploded diagram to see exactly which parts are replaceable.
I have just replaced mine with a Thetford Freshup, from Camping Online (tel 01246 857 591).
For £104 I got replacement cassette, new toilet seat and cover, and some toilet fluid.I had been considering replacement anyway as my motorhome is 10 years old and is used a lot, but things came to a head when the closing disc became stuck.I think you should consider this. I have used Camping Online before, and their service is excellent.
If you are handy, check out the manuals to which Tango refers, as it may be possible to repair. Our C200 was still going strong on our old van after 16 years, so its worth checking out first.
Our current C250 had several problems that I sorted for about a tenner in the end
