I am currently in the process of repairing the damp in my caravan.

I have removed the inner wall board and inbetween the inner plywood/wallboard and the polystyrene insulation there are completely randomly placed thin shims of metal which have now rusted due to the damp.

Question is, why are they there and do I need to replace them before putting the new wall board back over the top?

They are normally placed as securing points for furniture and blinds etc. It’s something for the screws to go in to and hold rather than just the wallboard

I doubt they are there as fixing points - the acts of drilling them and driving in screws would probably cause the plates to shear away from the polystyrene.

My guess is they have used to pack low points so the wall boards would not seem to have voids behind them when fitted. I have instances on my current van and previous ones where fitters use anything to hand to get things to 'fit' - bits of foam, plastic, aluminium, washers etc

they all seem to be near edges or joins in the boards..

packing pieces seems the most obvious use to me..

They aren’t spacers or at least I’ve never seen them used as spacers,, why use metal spacers to pack a board out that is going to be stuck on? Swift use metal plates all the time for fixing points, saves on timber and van weight etc. They don’t drill the holes they use self tapping screws etc.

they are not spacers as such.. i think their job is to keep the joins where the boards meet (or end) level and avoid "steps" and avoid one board crushing in relative to the one its butted up to..

They are fixing plates these are put in at the factory for all models it’s easy to to fit them for all models.
How else do you think thing# like the blind legs hold on with small screws into 3mm wallboard and polystyrene.
You can bond new ones in yourself if you need to replace them with proper wall board adhesive they will never move

I’ve looked on their website but when I bought the van there was no trim on the outside of the door so I don’t know what it looks like to be able to replace it!

But look at the image - the plates are all over the place and don't have holes in...
