Just wondered if anyone has had any issues with (what I think) with condensation on the stem of the aerial in the caravan. We have been getting water on the shelf inside the wardrobe when we arrive on site. It's not leaking in and not there before we set off. Has anyone had this please?
nope, never had that issue at all, are you sure its not leaking? how can it be condensation when your not even in there? condensation is caused by warm air meeting cold surfaces, so where is the warmth coming from?
It also sounds like a leak to me as well and agree that it won't be condensation. The best thing to do is get a squeezy bottle (not a fine spray one) and fill with cold water. Mop up any existing water lying on the shelf and get an assistant to watch the underside of the aerial whilst you go up to the caravan roof and squeeze the water out around the perimeter of the aerial base. This will detect a leak but you don't need to force the water in by use of a hose pipe, just a good flow of steady water (like rain) to detect any leak. If there is a leak it's quite easy to fix but it's best not to leave it too long otherwise it will lead to a damp issue which is best avoided at all costs if possible.
Sounds like a leak to me too, but perhaps into the flying saucer on top which transmits down the aluminium tube, not enough to leak immediately, but when moving, it sloshes about and exits via the winder.
Does that make sense?
So I’d say, not the seal at the roof, but around the flying saucer join at halfway down.

Let us know result please
It all depends on which model the Status flying saucer dish is as mine is the earlier round type with no winder handle so the aerial is completely sealed on the roof so no rain water can run down a tube.
Maybe the OP could state which Status aerial they have as it's a valid point which you have mentioned.
Thanks for the responses. We have checked the van after it has poured down all week - no water. Checked before we have gone anywhere - no water but after arriving on site and opening the wardrobe door the top shelf in the wardrobe under the aerial there is splashes of water so perhaps it is collecting on the dish. Sorry I don't know what sort it is. The van is a Swift Charisma 230 2011 model
Probably elliptical rather than round. Is there a winding handle on the end of the alu-tube?
Looks like you’ll need to investigate if you can open and reseal the flying saucer or if a new unit is necessary. I squeeze of sealant around the join might be a temp fix.
Yes there is a winding handle on the end. We'll see what happens next time we take it out. If it happens again we will have to take it back to the dealer. not new but came with a warranty
So what's happening then is the rain is only coming into the wardrobe shelf after having towed the caravan through rain which suggests that rain water is entering due to the force of the wind which can be the only feasible reason. Maybe after all a hose pipe will produce the evidence you need but the problem needs to be fixed anyway so I would be inclined to remove the aerial base from the roof, clean all the old sealant off the aerial base and roof with white spirit and apply some fresh waterproof sealant but it needs to be the correct product for caravans and not the domestic sealant for kitchens and bathrooms from DIY outlets such as B&Q or Homebase etc.
Tango55 no rain doesn't come in. It's sort of like the shaft of the aerial is cold but when the van is in storage there is no water but when the van has been towed to site there are drops of water on the shelf beneath it in the wardrobe. Once on site no water is leaking in. It's very strange.
Sounds like you have the elliptical status 530 aerial. These are known to get water inside the body and this then runs down the centre tube into your caravan. I had the same problem and on investigation found I needed to reseal the joint around the two halves. Not had a problem since.

When the van has been towed to site there are drops of water on the shelf beneath but nothing happens when the caravan is stationary. Surely that's enough evidence to prove that the rain water is coming in by force at speed when towing the caravan through rain thus the water collected in the tube drips out below when stationary on site. It's obvious that the seal between the aerial and roof needs replacing otherwise it's just going to be an ongoing problem so if the caravan is under warranty the advice is to take it back and explain exactly when it does leak.
As well is two words!
How does a sage know everything about everything? or does he? or does he just think he does?
Remember, if you buy something you bought it, not brought it.
Tedthebear that sounds more like it. Sorry Tango55 it happened this weekend when we got to site but we hadnt been through any rain. Thanks for all your input guys it's much appreciated.
if its the flying saucer the then we had the same issue. Resolved by the following;-
Remove saucer an stem from van
Bring indoors and you may find the discover the sound of sloshing water from inside the saucer....Remove Saucer from stem and tip up and down ---water will run out of the saucer. Then leave to dry for a week or so upside don in a warm room ( airing cupboard ) until it dries out.
Then scrape all the sealant form between the two halves of the saucer - but do not try and tear apart ( they are glued and sealed )
Then get some clear low modulus silicone ( easier to remove from finger than silk flex) Get a friend to hold the saucer while you apply a small amount of sealant into he small gap between the two halves of the saucer. Then run a wet finger around - forcing the sealant into the gap. Clear off surplus and allow to dry.
Then contact STATUS and ask of they will send you a new 'O' ringer the Jong between the saucer and stem. Fit into place and run a small bead of the sealant around the joint..Not forgetting to feed the aerial cable back inside the van first .
Cured our '' leak''and once all done we got a much better tv reception. Th water inside the saucer must have been affecting the electronics etc.
Could well be condensation, I have a two year old Eddiie rambler and the whole van suffering from condensation if I warm the van slowly to about 17 degrees then increase it to 23 degrees heat wise it’s fine but wack the heating up to max and very bit of clothing in the lockers ended up soaking wet , there’s no leaks that I can see with useing a hosepipe or without, the van stored at home so I can keep an eye on it but condensation only appears when we are away with very locker in use with the grandchildren so slowly heating the van seems to be the answer but I have photos of the condensation in the overhead lockers which I will be sending to the dealer in the next few days when I book it in for a service to keep the warranty up to date
