I haven't heard about having to do that before, AJ.
But someone else might have a different view.
We use our blown air heater (Truma) without taking anything off the outside of the van.

I just checked my Truma CP Plus manual and I cannot see any mention of taking the vents off the side of the caravan for using the blown air heater. I thought that the two vents on the side of my caravan were related just to the fridge....

I think maybe you are getting confused with the heating and hot water tank as I wholly agree with the comment above.
The flue for the gas fire comes out of a small exhaust vent on top of the caravan roof but the hot water tank flue (when used on gas) is a removable cover on the side of the caravan (about knee height) which is there to stop dust and insects entering the system when not in use.

We have the same caravan as you, there is no cover for the heater, I think you may have got confused with the water heater which is on the other side of the van, this has a cover that needs to be removed if used on gas. We find the heating works well on electric and we prefer to use the room heater as opposed to the blown air
