I have a 1999 Compass Rallye GTE 5.0. Rear corner steady has always been hard to wind right up to the van (which I have discovered is because it seems to press against the chassis?!) and when winding the leg up on Saturday the spindle popped out damaging the pin and collar that hold it in place. I would have thought it would be fairly simple to purchase replacement collar and pin but I can’t seem to find them anywhere!!! I’m wondering whether a small nut and bolt may suffice to holding it in place, but surely you must be able to get a proper replacement from somewhere!

At this rate I might end up replacing the whole steady with a used one off eBay (but this won’t be easy because the bolts spin due to their age and they are located underneath the sink unit floor so not too easy to get to the top of the bolts!).

Anybody sorted this themselves either buying replacement parts or come up with an ingenious way to repair it? I seem to have hit so many snags in what I thought would be such a simple repair!

It sounds like the thread spindle is bent which is most likely why it has popped out but you can usually tell if it's bent when winding the spindle bolt with the handle as it goes a bit tight then a bit loose and also winds uneven. This is usually how the corner steady spindles get bent when people use them as jacks to level the caravan but the corner steady is not a part that is repairable so you have to buy the complete unit. I think there may be different designs so check you have the same replacement.

They do have a replacement spindle but I notice they actually state that it doesn’t come with the pin - which is the part I need! I’m wondering if I’m missing something - has it got a different name???

The spindle isn’t bent - so ideally I just need to source the pin that goes through the spindle to hold it in place - which I thought would be quite simple to do with google!

Try an engineering or bearing supplier for a dowel pin or roll pin of the appropriate size.

Thank you - adding the word dowel to pin seems to get me exactly what I’m looking for! Knew there’d be an added word I need just couldn’t find it! Thank you!
