Can anyone please offer some advice.

I bought an Abbey caravan a few months ago and have been away in it about 8 time snow and love it!

On the most recent trip the toilet light came on and my husband went to empty it and the compartment was full of wee :( He cleaned it out and we thought that as the problem solved.

However, about 10 mins later I noticed the carpet infant of the toilet door was wet and it was soaked in urine!

Does anyone know how this might have happened? We initially explained the wee getting into the compartment by maybe the kids not flushing it and my husband pulled the cassette without checking. But how did the wee get into the van?

Thanks!

Sounds like it's been overflowing for a while. We never rely on the light and always empty it before it really needs it. Do make sure that you dry everything out as quickly as possible.

Hi..
I probably won't be of any help..
but assuming that everything is intact(seals okay, no splits in bowl or cassette etc), I would probably opt for the bowl still having wee in it when the cassette was withdrawn, and/or the cassette had been full (and overflowing?)for longer than you thought?..

When we had motorhomes, we didn't rely on any cassette "full" indictors (be they lights or green-red graduations), instead we just peered into the top of the cassette....
Also, rather than rely on the seals retaining fluids in the bowl, we would just have the shutter open when "using" the loo. Than way, fluids go straight through.

Oops! sorry Jean. I crossed your post.

I would check your husbands shoes and slippers. If they are wet that may give you a clue.

In an emergency if your toilet packs up working and you really need to use it, no onsite facilites ect, then you can always revert to the thick strong plastic bag to line your toilet bowl, and a scoop of cat litter in it to absorb the liquid. Just tie the bag up when it needs emptying and dispose of in the sites waste disposal bins.

Prepare the same way ready for the next user, or until you can get the problem fixed perminently.

Good idea. I don't have anything posh like a flushing loo, I just have a luggable loo, and if on a THS site where the emptying facilities are a long way away, line it in just the way you say, Julia. I use pet bedding sawdust instead of cat litter though, it's a lot lighter.

In answer to the OP, sometimes the valves or seals fail. Find out the make of your loo and google it, there should be some kind of kit available to replace any seals. I remember reading there was a particular fault similar to what you describe on one of the Thetford models.

It may well be that the float was stuck in the down position and gave a faulse indication that it wasn't full when it actually was. The rising level of liquid may have softened whatever it was until such time that it was free to move but by then it was overfull.
Not opening the blade before weeing into it is another contender.

Good tip on the cat litter idea.

Thanks everyone, I am not sure really how it overflowed, I am guessing red light didn't work as it should mate as Pickled Onion suggests.

My concern though it how did it leak into the caravan. The rug was absolutely saturated and about 50cm x 30 long patch!

We had a similar problem when we acquired our new to us van. The C250 toilet was different from the previous C200 one, whereby the pull-along handle must be located over a retaining lip, which I suspect was not done, so the bowl and cassette were slightly out of alignment. It was the only thing I could think of to cause this.

you need to renew the seals on the cassette part of the toilet.. they are not expensive..

you can buy a complete cassette part for about £90 they call it a refresh.. the seals are the only part that wears out though..

they should not leak also when closed they should also hold liquid in the bowl..

dont rely on the indicator.. open the flap and look in..

A very late response to the thread(sorry)..
Although in an ideal situation the toilet cassette housing assembly would really be totally sealed from the habitation area(so as to contain/direct away any "leaks"),in reality caravans and motorhomes just aren't usually put together with that much "finesse"...so I wouldn't be at all surprised if some excess "fluid" found it's way under/across flooring. So I wouldn't really worry too much about that, (other than to make sure the cassette isn't over filled - or misaligned?- again )

As for seals.
The only seals we've ever had with our loos have been on the cassette, so it should be easy enough to see if they are doing their job by running some clean water in it and tipping it upside down.
