The shower room cabinet in our Elddis 302 van has failed due to the thin plastic cracking near to the lower mirror hinge point.

I have tried locally strengthening by glueing a strip of wood under front edge of the cabinet and locating the mirror pivot in that, but the entire floor of the cabinet is flexing and it isn't safe to hold the mirror.

Thinking of making a complete new floor from ply with wood finish, but concerned as to how to attach the same to the walls of the van. Any ideas on this or alternative solutions?

Hi feelyjordan I have successfully repaired plastic by first gluing together with superglue working in stages small section at a time. Then reinforcing the break with resin and fibre tape or the addition of plywood (as you say a new ply floor) glued in place with araldite. By mending the original plastic the original fixing points can be reused should you need additional points caravans usually have a timber frame where panels meet and in corners. Hope this helps.

Thanks for that towedyears.

The plastic is probably too far gone to repair but I hadn't thought of resin and tape. That might be an easier way to firmly bond the existing wooden repair to the remainder of the cabinet.

In the past I have used acetone and dissolved Lego bricks to repair damaged ABS components, but this thing is so thin and flimsy (poor design) that I think a stronger fix is required.

I used to have a mirror sailing dinghy built with marine ply joined with resin and tape. The join is watertight strong and almost invisible. Your bathroom cabinet designed for looks and weight sadly not long term strength . No doubt once repaired it could last for years.

Spent many a happy hour racing a Mirror Miracle that I built in the garage. Sadly can't take the cold these days, but great fun at the time!

The Mirror use to go on the car roof with caravan in tow. Caravanning opens up the great outdoors to so many hobbies and pastimes. I also dislike the cold but I always was a fair weather sailor.

Following your suggestion I bought an Isopon glass fibre repair kit from Halfords for £12 and used it to reinforce the previous wooden repair. I drilled out the end of the crack in the ABS cabinet and back filled with Lego brick dissolved in acetone. It certainly feels a lot more rigid, probably better than it was originally, just need to re-install in the van!

Thanks for your assistance, I can't imagine how much Elddis would have charged for a new cabinet, assuming they were able to supply!
