Hi , I have water come in at the front end of my Bailey Pageant series 7 , quite a lot , I believe it to be getting through the window hinge rail ? , but will double check with a hose when I get home, however >> if it is the hinge rail , is it an easy job ? and > do you use the mastic tape on a role to seal it ? I phoned a caravan repair shop and they said no , we dont use that , we use the silicon out of a tube , and wanted to chage me £145 + vat to do the job , I always thought that the mastic sealing tape was used , then screw the rail onto it and squash it , thus making the seal , anyone done one before please ?? Thank you.

yes we have done it and yes you are right its mastic you need not silicone, if they are doing that then its just a bodge job, I know you might not want to say who but can you give a location of the dealer for the rest of us to avoid?

we have a 2003 bailey Monarch a couple of years back I noticed water running down the inside of the gas locker ---seemed to be coming from under the window cill......It was the hinge on the front window...Local mobile repairer came out and removed the hinge, used the ''mastic on a roll'' and made sure there was mastic ( from a tube ) squirted int the screw holes...He also replaced the fridge element ( we supplied ) and charged £125 incl vat...

Our local caravan dealer ( Bailey dealer ) also advised on another slight leak on the toilet cassette door and on a rear light unit - to use LOW MODULUS clear silicone ( 2.99 from screw fix ) as an an alternative to sika flex....

The front windows are fairly easy to remove. Undo the 2 screws holding the telescopic stays on each side of the window, grab the window and raise it up to almost horizontal and it pulls forward out of the hinge strip. You can examine/replace sealant as necessary. refit in reverse order.

Clean off the old sealant with white spirit then use an alcohol based or meths fluid to remove the grease left by the white spirit

One last thing - don’t be tempted to do the “wipe it smooth with a wet finger” method like you do when sealing a bath with silicone ——-it will just drag it off and it’s a bugger to get off your skin - unless you use white spirit . Don’t be concerned about it splurging our from under the rails .... at least you know you got plenty on to seal it

Glad to hear of your impending success yoggie, well done.
Most work maintaining a caravan uses a fairly basic skill-set that can be acquired along the way without too many set backs. With the exception of stuff that if you get it wrong it could kill you, so leave that to the professionals, the rest is worth a punt, plus it gives a great feeling of satisfaction when it works. It gives you the confidence to do more.

Dave.
