I have just noticed that when using my 12v tv in my Elddis van using the rubbish stick aerial on the roof, I can get plenty of channels until I plug in the hook up. With the mains hook up on I get no channels found at all. Any one else noticed this? Amy ideas why?

Look online for ferrite beads. Your rubbish stick antenna on the roof should receive perfectly acceptable signals in 90pc of locations in the British Isles.

Once upon a time you used to able to buy these from Maplins but now they’ve gone its an online job from RS.

They come in several forms but the one you want is circular and about an inch and a half in diameter.   Just wrap the rubbish stick antenna cable round it a couple of times near where it plugs into the telly and bob is likely to be your father’s brother and fanny your aunt.

Cost of these things no more than a couple of pounds sterling. Shudder to think how many Euros

Turn the battery charger/12 power supply off and see if the picture improves.

Do you have a battery fitted? Maybe voltage spikes from the charger. Having a battery fitted smooths the ripples out.

Yes I have a battery fitted and the charger is connected automatically when on hook up. The point is that the transformer seems to cause interference. I have ordered a ferrite ring from RS. I will fit that and report back.

Another quick thought make sure the battery terminals are tight particularly the -ve where it meets the chassis - bright clean and tight

Yes I am particularly careful about good connections at the battery. I should also mention that I have a 140w solar panel permanently connected. I think the problem is just interference from the 240v AC to 12v DC transformer. A ferrite ring should sort it.

Ferrite ring arrived. No difference I am afraid.
I tried my external aerial with hook up connected and it is perfect. I normally leave the both aerials diplexed, and the picture is perfect on battery. However on hook up it breaks up. The interference is obviously coming through the stick aerial because if I unplug it from the diplexer leaving just the external aerial all is well.

Try grounding the connector at the amp end. The most likely is coupling due to the antenna cable running with power cables. Just hold a piece of cable on the outside of the F connector (assuming it is a metal one) and see if the noise is reduced. if it is this then put a capacitor across the connector to ground. Could also be a poor cable, test by disconnecting the output from the amp to the TV and running an external wire to the TV antenna input.

You missed out the vital piece of information about the diplexer in the original post.

I don’t understand why on earth you would connect a ‘rubbish stick aerial’ to a diplexer which already has a proper external antenna connected.

You have both caused and fixed your own problem but one which should never have existed!!

Hi David, you are right the diplexer is not really needed, I do not know why it is there. I removed it and all is well. I just need to swap the connections over when I change between the two aerials. Thanks for all your help.

Hi,
Swapping the aerial connections over will likely weaken either the cable inside the plug, or socket inside the amp - result: back to square 1 (no signal).
I would recommend fitting one of the following (or similar) between the two aerials and the amp, therefore providing a semi-fixed switch:

Purchased a brand new switch as suggested. No good I am afraid it introduces loads of noise and breaks up the tv picture just as much as a diplexer.
