Hi all

New to the caravan game, have bought a sterling 6 berth and done a few weekend trips.

Does anyone have any tips for cleaning/disinfecting the water system and Water butts for next season?

Thanks all!

Puriclean is the best product for sterilising drinking water systems and barrels etc. as it destroys the bio-film which is the harmful bacteria that breeds on the plastic surface. You can see more in detail about the product below.

Can second puriclean. Its easy to use. We clean the entire system at the start of the season and also at the end. In between we use Aquasol in every water refill and have never had any problems. We even drink the water from the main tap without any adverse reaction.

We use puriclean too but don't drink the water unless it is boiled.

Another vote for Puriclean treatment at the start of the season and start of each tour.

we clean using puriclean in the march time, then a new filter, and that's it other than swilling out the aquaroll before using it on each trip, and we drink the water from the tap hot or cold! and been doing this for 40 odds years and never had an issue, lets face it the longest an aquaroll of water lasts is about a day at best! and on leaving the site no matter what time of year the water gets fully drained every time.

I don't know why because the idea of treating the water with Puriclean is precisely what it is intended to do. The product is used for marine purposes too so if you are out in a boat in the middle of the Atlantic for example you haven't exactly got access to fresh drinking water so the onboard water needs to be treated respectively in order to make it safe to drink.

As a keen home brewer I use Puriclean to clean and sterilise brewing vessels equipment etc. Having read the data sheets for this product I would not drink water with any but the slightest trace of this product in it.
For any of you that do I would advise read the ingredient data sheet on the internet.

I always rinse, as advised the water system 3 times with clean water after cleaning with Puriclean so as to remove the solution from the system. During the rest of the season I always use Aquasol in the water tank. This keeps the water fresh and also stops bio film from forming if it has already been removed by Puriclean. The water is drained after each trip and Puriclean used again at the end of the season before being put in storage As already stated we drink the water and have never experienced any problems, but this could be because we always use Aquasol during the season.

That was the point I was trying to make.
It’s a great product and does what it says on the container.
I run my van around our village a couple of times with Puriclean in the tank. We have quite a few sleeping policemen in the village and going over them sloshes it about giving the tank a good old clean. Then a couple of good flushes out with fresh water. Works for me.
So if you think about it if it cleans and sterilises the tank like it does why would you drink this treated water.

I think Tango has got the wrong end of the stick. Puriclean is for cleaning they system not the actual water. The water can be treated with sterilising tablets or liquid if you feel the need to. Normally I only treat the water if I am not sure of the quality of the source such as on some small farm sites and where the water may have been laying in the site pipes for some time especially in hot weather. I can not recall ever having an upset stomach when caravanning and I have been caravanning or camping for the past sixty odd years.

I haven't got the wrong end of the stick at all. It's absolutely pointless sterilising the water in the barrel if the system hasn't been treated otherwise the treated water will enter a system that is contaminated with bacteria.

We always put our filler hose in the water barrel with Puriclean and draw the sterilising water into the hose. We leave it for the maximum time but the hose still doesn't get clean. This is why we choose not to drink the unboiled water.

Now here’s the thing.
Boil 2 litres of water using calor propane. 20p to 25p.
Buy 2 litres of bottled water from Tesco 17p.
If you’re not on EHU winner winner. 👍
