Hi all,

I have pretty much got the to do list for what needs doing to our caravan, but I can't seem to get a straight answer for what sealants etc to use. My plan was to use the mastic roll to put the rails back on with, and 512 to seal all edges. After getting in a google hole I am now a little confused as it seems this isn't what 512 is meant for? Our screwfix is selling Sikaflex EBT, and others have suggested Soudal Fix All. Are they all the same thing? Because some of them seem to be advertised as just a glue. Is the rule just don't use a silicone sealant on the outside?

With this coronvirus scare I'm hoping to buy my materials at the start in case the shops start closing! Perfect time to work on it really!

So any advice with what I should be using would be much appreciated.

be careful not to over think it, there are so many your head may explode!

W4 mastic on a roll (various widths available) and Sikaflex 512 which is a sealant and a adhesive.
I have never found anything better than these (cheaper maybe but not better

Sikaflex 512 👍
Have fitted quite a few solar panels to different vans using Sikaflex512 to secure the fixing brackets to the van roofs.
Never had one come adrift yet. 😊 Great stuff.

W4 can be used under the rails, it gives a thicker bed where sealant could be squeezed out It is very good for roof vents and the like

Sticky stuff to use though

Hi all. Sorry for the late response. I didn't get notified of any of these replies!

Thanks for advising 512. How does Sikaflex EBT compare? It seems to be more common and I've read it is the new best version?
If I use the roll mastic to apply the rail, do I need to seal the edge with a sealant tube too?

at moggaman. You start by removing screws on the rails. Gently pry under the rail to remove old sealant. Do not bend the rail, and do not pull using the window. Wash with soap to remove dirt. Then scrape off as much as you can. Remove the old stuff with white spirit then wipe clean with methylated spirit. Apply new mastic/sealant and re-apply your rail. Easier said than done!
