Most people use common sense and check the route first using Earth Google. I only check the route where it reverts to A roads as pointless checking if the route is all motorway.
One BIG advantage with many Satnavs is that they have "Traffic" built into them to advise of issues on the road and then offer you another route.

The traffic re-routing can be great for a solo car but has huge potential for getting you into trouble with caravan or camper on a standard car dedicated unit! It's usually done without showing you the new route in advance, only giving a uninformative 'Re-routing' warning message whilst ALL routing stops! Both my old Garmin and my current TomTom have tried to send me on some crazy reroutes (and that's just with the car!) in an attempt to avoid only a couple of minutes delay. I disabled auto re-routing, and now take the decision for myself as to whether to chance the delay or go off piste with new route.

If you've been sensible and manually planned and checked your route is suitable for caravan/camper, the last thing you need is a dumb machine playing Russian roulette with punting you down a unnecessary narrow/windy/too steep, or even impassible, alternative route. Unless I know the region/roads well I'll stick to my chosen route and suffer the delays. If roads are closed, follow the trucks on any forced diversion, if they can get through, so can you. Just pray it's not a numpty artic driver trying to put his 40 ton waggon over hump back bridges, under tiny bridge arches and through quaint narrow villages! - avoid following a foreign registered truck if possible!

Hopefully a dedicated caravan/camper sat nav would keep it's large vehicle rules in place when re-routing.

Correct it does stay within the rules when re-routing.

I have had a Tom Tom which I added the Camper map to which cost about £90 this was a few year ago and updates only last a year. Currently I have a Garmin 760 camper its not perfect it will still take you over Sutton Bank which is caravan exempt. So use common sense, I use sites directions and incorporate that into the route.

The current TomTom Go Camper automatically updates and there is no charge!
