Hi, looking for some advice on replacing the element of my water heater. Every time the heater is switched on (with water in the tank) it trips the main board. I believe it may have been switched on when there was no water in the tank. Can anyone advise the cost of the heating element and provide instructions on how to replace. Previous forums mentioned some heaters may have a reset switch unfortunately mine doesn't. Any advice/help appreciated. See photos attached. Best regards

There are quite a few threads on the Internet on how to change the element, I think the main problem is accessibility whether you repair or replace.
Also search on this forum as there are previous threads

Hi and welcome to the forum. It sounds like your element fried when no water in the tank and the internal heater is a short circuit to earth.

There are 3 different versions of the older Truma water heater and 2 different elements. Luckily you have the wattage rating so it will make life easier but not the price. Yours looks like the Mk 3 850W one which has a couple of bends in it. see here for details. Also, check the FAQs on the same page for a bit of a walkthrough on how to change it.

Hi Dave, many thanks for your welcome and response. Yeah I think you're right it's probably burnt out due to no water in the tank. I'll check out the link and see how I get on. Probably won't do straight away but I'll let you know how I get on. Can I also pick your brain on if I can use gas as an alternative (short term) for hot water, prior to replacing the element. If so, what do I do? You can probably tell I'm new to caravanning. Many thanks

No problem Barry, we were all new to all this malarkey at one time. The main reason this forum exists it to pass on knowledge gained over time, and free to all who ask for it.

Yes indeed, you can use gas to heat the water instead. They were designed to be totally independent systems within the one unit so you can use it for as long as you like.

Ours went a few years ago, so just using gas now.
It works better on gas anyway, plus less chance of tripping a low amp hook up if we are ever on one. The element is something like £100, installation probably the same.
I figured I’d have to burn a whole load of gas to make it worth fixing.

I have just discovered my water heater has burnt out in my Bailey Ranger 2/4 2006 model. The on/off rocker switch is situated at the foot of one of the beds, and very close to the floor.It switches on/off very easily, so I believe the cause was some luggage pushing against it while we were in transit, and not noticed on arrival.
Seems amazing that Bailey did not think of this when designing this model.The trip switch at the fuse box is hardly designed to protect against heating of an empty tank.

Yeah sounds like a bit of a design flaw. Are you just running your hot water from gas or are you going to replace the element? Cheers anyway?
