Hi
I have just bought a 2000 Bailey Ranger 500/5
I have it parked outside my house at the moment
I plugged the main power cable into the caravan then to the house
But when I switched it on, it was tripping out in the house fuse box and in the caravan ever time I tried
Anyone got any answers as to why this is happening ??
Make sure the power in the van is off and all rcd mcd switches are in the off position
Then plug the ehu cable into the van with the power switched on at the house
Switch on the rcd and mcb and see if it still trips the house
Have you asked the previous owner if they had the same problem
Let us know how you get on
Have you actually got a leisure battery connected up to the two terminals in the van?
I assume that the intention is to charge the leisure battery but haven't actually confirmed that this is the case.
If there is no battery in circuit then check to see if the two battery clips have made contact with each other causing a short circuit.
A short circuit shouldn't trip an RCD they only trip on a leakage to earth.
You need to carry out your investigation step by step,Plug in your Hookup cable to your house before you connect to the van ,if it doesn't trip the house RCD then the cable is OK if it trips you have a faulty cable.
If OK then open all the switches in the van and connect the hookup cable,if OK then close the RCD if it stays closed systematically close the MCBs one at a time to check if you have a faulty circuit which is tripping the RCD,if it trips isolate all equipment on the faulty circuit,fridge/cooker etc and unplug all portable appliances, close the MCB and if it stays closed reconnect each item individually till the RCD trips to identify the source of the fault.
If the RCD trips when you close the MCB with nothing connected that would indicate an internal wiring fault at that point unless you have the necessary instrument you need an electrician.
Hi
Yes I have checked the hook up cable and that is fine, also checked the connector that plugs into the house and that is fine.
Yes there is a battery connected ok, I want to plug it into the house to give it electric to make sure the fridge works ok and all the sockets ready for when we actually go away in it, cos I don't want to go away in it, then find out when I plug it in to a pitch nothing works or things keep tripping out
Also there is the 12v switch on the main board that I think switches from battery to mains ?? and there is also a switch at the door but not sure what that is for ?
would of helped if it had a manual to tell me what to do
Without doing a test to identify the fault it's now just a guesssing game as to what could be the reason why the mains electrical circuit is tripping out therefore you need a qualified electrician with testing equipment to detect the underlying fault. It sounds like it could just be a defective mains cable from the house to the van but there again it's just a sheer guess.
Does it trip with everything disconnected in the van with the RCD in the van closed but everything else isolated?
It is quite simple to identify what is causing the problem in the van by logically following the steps in the sequence as I stated. If you get an electrician they would first do what I have suggested you do yourself, the only time you need any instrument is if it is a wiring fault on the circuit
If the problem is in the van then you would expect the van RCD to trip as well as in the house, its not impossible for the house trip to operate rather than the van but unusual.

Make sure the electric water heater isn’t on. If there’s no water in the element burns out & will just trip the power every time you switch the electric on.
