Sorry for the long post......I have a 2001 Elddis Mistral GT 2 Berth.... I have so far completed quite a bit of work on it, from removing and replacing the shower and toilet after speedcoating to general work like regritting the motor mover rollers, replacing the herzim strip and resealing the awning rails with sikaflex EBT+ due to an area of damp some 3 feet long under the awning rail.
The damp is quite bad in the centre with reading of 28+ over an area of some 12" which then drops off 18, 17 and so on towards the edge of the strip of damp over the other foot each way. Would I be right in saying that during spells of hot weather the damp reading would be higher due to the panel 'sweating' at the top as the damp tries to vent though what little gaps there may be.   Some people say leave it alone and let it dry out, but I'm thinking with the vinyl wallpaper trapping the moisture inside that might not be the way forward. I was considering (call me dozy if you think the idea is dozy) cutting the wallpaper inside the cupboard and trying to peel it off in one piece, which were it to be successful could just be stuck back on again after drying out by either using a heater or a dehumidifier. Which brings me on to my next question. Many of these domestic dehumidifiers go down to 30% humidity and this leaves me a little confused as to whether if I have a reading of 30 in my caravan damp area the dehumidifier will not do anything or if a damp reading of 30 and a humidity level of 30 are two entirely different things and the dehumidifier will indeed dry the wall out reasonably well. The damp area itself has no staining, and not particularly soft either in comparison to areas with normal readings...it is only in the very centre of the damp area that the damp reading goes down the wall at all that about 3" wide by 6" downwards and the reading drops off quickly below that into the normal range

I welcome your thoughts and thank you for your help.

Ray.

Hi Ray and welcome to the forum. I had a smallish patch of damp due to water ingress. I removed, cleaned, and resealed the rail but continued to get some damp at times. I too peeled back the vinyl coating (which wasn't too difficult when damp) in a vain bid to stop cutting out the wallboard.

First, I tried keyhole surgery, making as small a hole as I thought I could get away with, but ended up having to cut out a larger size of the panel. 1) to get access to all the actual impacted area, and 2) to hide the cuts in the fabric of the overhead locker framework so that the job looked pretty much invisible when done. The hardest job was the removal of the overhead lockers to get at it.

Like you, I had no external staining, only of the plywood which when dry was pretty useless. In the end, removing everything allowed me to see the cause of the leak in the first instance. It was a rusty steel screw through a large hole the sidewall but it was tucked under the roof aluminium and hadn't been sealed.

Basically I'm glad I did pull it to bits and fix it properly, once and for all.

Dave.

Dave, many thanks for your reply. Currently I have borrowed a 25 litre per day dehumidifier which is also an air con unit.... I have run the exhaust tube into the affected cupboard. The sun is beating down on the outside, the exhaust is heating up the inside and the moisture is beginning to sweat out through the gaps at the top of the boards. Initially this seems to lead to higher readings, presumably as the moisture finds it has to try and vent somewhere and makes it to the surface.... As I’m using the caravan in the next few weeks ripping it apart is not really an option currently..... I don’t know if the dehumidifier will help that much, but it’s worth a try even if I still have to replace the wallboard when all is said and done. Caravan guy keeps saying it’ll dry out naturally, but I have to say I’m not completely sold on ignoring it as a fix....

Ray.

Using the dehumidifier during the hot weather slashed the damp readings in that area from unacceptable 30+ down into the teens and single figures, some softness appeared at the very top 1/4” of wallboard in a couple of small places....currently I am monitoring this for a while as the rest is solid... if further work becomes needed then I will do the wallboard at that point, but I guess for now I will just take it day by day......
