Yes wire insulation melted, this was found due to a negative carbon reading when the caravan was being serviced.
Also the thermo coupling as well so having both replaced.
Yes the CO2 meter would pick that up but we had the van 2 months then lockdown happened, We had 2 outings before the lockdown and had used the heater on electric only, So we knew nothing about the issue, When the service was carried out the issue was picked up straight away by the service company. When opening up the unit the burnt wires issue was found also a lot of carbon deposit, Due to a spider web inside the round gas ring burner, So both ignition and temp thermo cut out been replaced also carbon deposit cleaned of as well. Must say it was an eye opener to see the extent of damage caused though. Also great work by the service contractor for finding the issues as well. Already booked them for next year service, Great service and issues explained in a great way as well.
It is the water heater for the caravan, the heater is both gas and electric. So we only had 2 outings in it since we bought it before the covids arrived. It was due a service so i thought get it done to make sure all was OK. In the 2 outings we had we used the electric only as we had a fully serviced pitch. Even though we have both detectors in the van the issue was not picked up till service time when the service people was alerted to the high level of CO2 coming from the heater on gas only. Having striped it apart the person found the issue shown in the picture. So I had both the ignition and temp controller replaced for good measure. Also the carbon build up removed from the underside of the water tank.
The detectors in caravans /homes etc are Carbon Monoxide(CO) detectors not CO2.They detect CO given off as a by product of burning fossil fuel.
The detectors aren't designed to detect fumes given off from melting insulation that is why a problem was only detected when the heater was operating on gas.
