I know this topic has been raised before when people have previously asked if there is a product on the market designed for descaling caravan hot water tanks which there used to be a product called Truma Aquastar which was a bit expensive at around 30 quid a shot but needed two applications of two different chemicals. I have just found out that 'Clean Tabs' the producers of Puriclean (fresh water sterilising product) have a product designed specifically for descaling cold water systems and needs only one application. There are two size bottles available which are 500 mls. and 1 ltr. which one application of the smaller size treats 10 to 15 litres. The Truma water tank on my caravan apparently holds 14 litres so one bottle of 500 mls. should be sufficient.
It's a brand new product and thought it was worth sharing the information.

Thanks for the heads-up on that stuff tango, nice to have a cheaper, safe alternative to the Truma one.

Consider citric acid, in powder form, it costs pennies and is very effective.
Despite its name, it is entirely non toxic and non corrosive.

Just search "citric acid descaler"

Available in small quantities from Wilco home brew section, and satisfy yourself by descaling your kettle.

PS:
I too have lashed out on Truma Aquastar in the past, but if you look at Aquastar's small print, I think you will find that it is citric acid.

Aquastar second treatment is just for flushing / nutralising.

If you use citric acid when you first pitch up, you will subsequently flush naturally as yo use water through your system.

Water will taste lemony for a while until flushed through, but I think best not to drink water that her been through my caravan pipes anyway.

It's completely safe to drink water from the caravan pipes providing that the system has been sterilised with Puriclean made by Clean Tabs. The product 'D Scale' and 'Puriclean' although made by the same company are entirely two different applications altogether so the descale application has to be done first then the sterilisation afterwards.

Yes I know as I have just recently bought a 500 ml. bottle of D Scale and read the contents on the container but it's going to be an easy application by just tipping the solution directly into the water barrel with the correct quantity of water. They advise to treat the hot water tank every 6 months but the amount of times you use a caravan each year it probably only needs treating once every 5 years. It's no different to a domestic kettle at home because the caravan kettle doesn't need treating as often as your domestic one does merely because of the amount of usage. Our caravan is now 17 years old and has probably never been done before that's the reason why I'm doing it this year. After talking to my service engineer a couple of years ago he said that it's not uncommon to exchange the heater element after a few years as the limescale build up can affect the efficiency of the hot water heater which eventually reduces the life of the component so from his experience I think prevention is better than cure. However, all components have a life span but some fail prematurely due to a lack of basic maintenance so it's worth spending under a tenner if I can get a few more years of service from the appliance.

My point was Wilko Citric Acid powder £1.75, Puritabs citric acid fluid £13.89
Same stuff, same application method.

Apparently white vinegar will also descale and clean the hot water system.
