Anybody had problems with their new car with Euro 6 engine & charging their fridge and battery while on the move. Reason I ask is I got a new GrandlandX Company car just sorting out the 5 pin 12v relay wiring diagram caravan fridge. And came across this in my research.https://www.12voltplanet.co.uk/user/downloads/BBC1225_caravan_model.pdf
wondering if i should cough up for one.
I don't know whether this is related to this posting.
I bought a BMW X3 in November 2020 and had a factory fitted tow bar with 13 pin plug. When I have bought previous BMW's with factory fitted tow bars there were only 11 pins in the 13 pin plug but in this one there were 13 pins. I made up a 13 pin plug and connected to the socket started the car to check out whether there was power coming to the terminals but there wasn't any power coming to the battery or fridge terminals. I opened up the socket and all of the terminals had wires going to them. I spoke to an auto electrician and he came out to me to check it out. He connected up told me to start the car and to put the headlights on and sure enough there was power coming to both the battery charging and fridge terminals. He told me that I should always run with the headlights on whilst towing because with the newer cars if you don't, the cars are so "eco friendly" that when the car battery is fully charged the alternator doesn't supply power to the fridge or battery charging for the caravan. So if the headlights are on the alternator is always charging. The guy didn't even want to charge me.
i have a 20 amp dc to dc charger.. i ran a separate 40 amp cable from my battery to a separate grey socket near the tow hitch..
i ran some 30 amp cable from the dc to dc charger which goes in the van..
it by-passes the normal charging circuits completely.. i can switch it on or off manually.. basically the dc to dc charger takes whatever voltage/current that is getting to the van and boosts it to provide a controlled 20 charge into the van batteries..
to be honest due to voltage drops and whatever its the only way to do it..
