ive just had my caravan serviced and been told my battery is showing 12v but will not work the motor mover and it wont work under load and been advised to replace the battery ive got a 110ah battery on at the moment would i be better buying a 130ah battery is there any point in buying the larger one i only use the battery for motor mover (power touch)as i use ehu when possible ive also got a factory fitted solar panel

just buy a cheap 110 leisure battery.. it will work your mover fine..

you can order them online off ebay..

110ah should be fine. 130ah would give you a bit more reserve, but it probably isn't necessary and may not fit in your battery box. You would have to take the dimensions to be sure, but often a 100ah battery is the biggest that will fit. Batteries and battery boxes do vary in size though.

A fully charged battery off charge after a day should be reading over 12.7v & retain that for at least a month if not used. If yours is showing only 12v after being on charge then it has had it.

As said replace with new 110amp leisure battery. If caravan is not used over winter then best idea is to remove battery & charge monthly with a smart charger. Do that & leisure battery should last for years.

It is the "health" of your battery that is the issue, not its size.

You also don't strictly need a true "Leisure" battery, as your stated use is not what these batteries are constructed to do.

I would spend on a decent branded maker, buying about 100Ah unit

Something like this, would also do a leisure role quite well for the occasions you do go off EHU.

Note though this battery will require you keep an eye on the acid level as it is not a sealed battery.

Hi Arnieslad,

This is quite interesting, I picked up my van on Saturday after a service and was told I needed a new battery, it was only holding 35%. I was amazed as it was a Numax and only 14 months old. It is going away for testing as in warranty but I took it out of the van over the winter and charged at home. .Someone has mentioned a smart charger, please can someone send me a link of a typical one as I am questioning myself if my charger has ruined the battery. Incidentally my battery was a 110ah and used mostly for the motor mover.

i have a 110 amh battery sat in my shed.. it been sat there for at least 4 years and never been used and is still as good as new.. its been top up charged maybe 4 or 5 times during this period..

a good battery will hold its charge for a long time.. a knackered one wont even take a charge in the first place..

having said that i now have lithium batteries in my caravan so no longer need to worry about such things..

One of the best brands is CTEK

Their MXS 5 a 5 Amp model is very suitable for both our caravan and car batteries.
You need to research where to buy as prices vary.


Both Aldi & Lidl do a budget smart charger that shares some features with CTEK units.

Leaving non smart chargers on for extended periods can seriously hurt batteries, unless they are very low current devices, but a proper smart charger is indeed the "smart" choice.

Smart chargers can be left hooked up to a battery and will maintain its voltage and condition. They can often restore a failing battery too, although not if its gone too far.

Both Aldi and Lidl do a smart charger, but they tend to sell out very quick when they have them in. Can't speak for the Lidl one as mine is an Aldi one which is great. From what I have heard the Lidl one is too.

One of the other most popular ones is the Ctek smart charger. Much more expensive than either the Lidl or Aldi ones and no better from what I have heard. Some say not as good but I can't confirm either way. All I know is that it's much more expensive.
