I have a Sterling europa 480 2005, i have also discovered a leak in the back corner, most of frame rotten a section of floor running across the caravan rotten which comes in around 4 inch, do i have to take out the whole section of floor or can i cut out the 4 inch strip and fix new to the solid part of the floor with new frame, would this be strong enough?? Thanks

Hi and welcome to the forum. First of all do you know the source of the leak, ie., shower tray cracked or water from bodywork getting on to it? Because if you don't it will happen again.

That said, the floor is a sandwich of two layers of thin ply and some polystyrene foam glued in between them. Opining it up and a good visual inspection will reveal the extent of the rot, and you can rebuild from sound wood. Fairly easy construction methods are used, no fancy tools required, just a modicum of DIY skills. The outer part of the floor and walls are where the strength is, it's where the walls are attatched to so it's wooden battens all round, often they rot too but can be scarf jointed onto sound wood.

Dave.

Check out damp repairs on you tube to give an idea of how to tackle it. Lots of good ideas and advice.

Provided that is all dried out I would just spread plenty of Isopon P40 over that. It is glass reinforced body filler so plenty strong enough. Build it up in layers. To stop water from the outside run a line of polyurethane sealant ie Tigerseal or Sikaflex 512 along awning rail. It is a bodge but one that works effectively on an older caravan that you want to use & not spend weeks on repairs.

With a 16 yr old caravan as long as you stop the water getting in & strengthen the damaged section then all good I would have thought ?

Yes just go around the seams with a bead of polyurethane sealant. Use that not silicone sealant. It worked ok on a ‘95 caravan I used to have.
