Is it possible to leave the battery on the caravan and charge it via the cigarette lighter point using a C-tek smart charger?
I know I can charge my car battery like this, and it would save alot of hassle if possible, as removing the battery and replacing is a mare, and I find I'm chewing the terminals up.
Thanks Martin.
change over to using quick release terminals and then its much easier and more effiecant to charge using 240 volts, a caravan charger will only charge to 80% where as depending on the condition of your battery, you should get a full charge if on 240v
I would think it is technically possible but I'm not sure that I would do it. When my caravan is not in use I prefer to remove the battery and take it indoors to charge it. Firstly taking it off isolates it from the caravan's electrics. Secondly, batteries can be damaged by extreme low temperatures, and finally I like to check and clean my battery terminals when I put the battery back in.
Yes, I always do the same, but I'm out I the van inI 11 days having just returned, and would have been good to have done this for this occasion.
Thanks
Solar panel? Keeps ours charged up whilst parked at the side of our garage. We have a mains hook up there but only plug that in day before going away to cool the fridge.

That is what we do during the summer months, apart from the solar panel which we don't have. Our caravan is parked at the front of the house, and the day before we go away anywhere we plug the hook-up lead into the mains to charge the battery and cool the fridge down. Once we are sure we won't be using it again that season, we take the battery off and winterise the rest of the caravan.
I dont see any reason why not. Make absolutely sure you connect the plug with correct polarity.
I would also plug the charger into the lighter socket before connecting charger to mains and vice versa when disconnecting. There will be live parts on the plug and just makes it safer if it touches something it shouldn't.
