hi just had tow bar fitted first time hook up no brake lights on my folding van as its a 1993 cleaned all rear lights put 2 new bulbs in side lights indicators working fine changing 7 pin plug tomorrow as it looks quite old hoping this may solve problem if not any ideas out there thank.s
You are starting at the right place. Changing the plug could easily solve the problem as once they get old corrosion can set in where the cables connect inside. It is quite possible that the wire to the brake lights has broken away from the terminal due to corrosion.
Inside the 7 pin plug, the wire for the brake lights is the red one (terminal 6) so when you split the existing plug have a look for a loose wire first or any evidence of burning caused by sparking. If the plug looks corroded then just change the plug but if the brake lights fail to work then at least you know which wire is connected to the trailer rear brake lights.
thanks for input about my rear lights left a reply in my last post so thanks found out after testing power to my cables but nothing when bulbs were put back, stripped cleaned them found that the small black bulb holders needed replacing as they had been glued at some time so waiting for new clips
hi after cleaning replacing bulb holders still cant get rear side lights to work tried every thing including replacing all spades cant think what else to do side front lights on van work so does indicators fog light brake lights just not side one,s checked 7 pin plug ok, help
Have you ever had the rear side lights working? Seems to me that the wire from the 7 pin to the rear side lamps has a break in it somewhere/ not connected. If I was doing the physical problem solving I would firstly check the bulbs are ok, then either check the continuity from the 7 pin plug to the lamp holders using a multimeter or put a temporary wire between the 7 pin plug side light connection and the lamp holders. Have you also checked the earth to these bulbs?
I would be inclined to look at earthing if both rear tail-lights aren't working as they are fed by different cables. One side is black, the other side brown, although I can't remember offhand which is which.
However, in your original post you said that it was the brake lights that weren't working. That's the red wire to both of them.
hi thank you for your feed back i will continue to do all thats been said as got all working but side lights at rear will test again with meter from my friend thanks again,
As well is two words!
