After trouble free running on electric, the water heater suddenly refuses to run off electric. When electricity switched on it trips the rcd on the site supply. It runs fine on gas. Cannot find any possible suggestions in any www site or manual. Very reluctant to try running on electirictybecause of the hassl of resetting site trip. Can anyone advise please?

Have you ever switched on the water heater accidentally without any water in it?
If you have then it may have burned out the heater element which is the reason for it constantly tripping the electrical circuit. You need a qualified electrical engineer who is able to test the appliance to confirm if the element has malfunctioned or not.

Can't remember if it has been turned on with no water. Could be a possibility.
Did have it checked over once and was told a new board was required at a prohibitive cost. Was also told that if it worked ok on gas it wasn't the board by someone else. Heating element was never mentioned. Hence my query afresh.
Could re-invent my call sign to "confused.com".
