We have just temporarily moved into our caravan which is regularly serviced, last time June 2021. We have propane gas, new system and pipe and regulators fitted in 2019, the type that switch over when one cylinder empty’s.

1,   Do you need the two cylinders to be connected, I have to replace one and taken it off……..replacement seem to be hard to come by!
2,   Does cold weather effect the burn?
Boiling the kettle for early morning cuppa takes ages!

The MCD has tripped and won’t reset, my fault I overloaded, brother in law electrician coming to sort out today. Relying on the kettle for the must have morning tea!!!!!

You don't need both cylinders connected for the system to work, but it is always best to leave both connected until you are ready to change the empty one.

Cold weather shouldn't affect the burn, but boiling a kettle on the gas does usually take longer than using an electric one. All kettles seem to take longer when you are waiting for a cuppa!

As Colin said, you don't need two cylinders, the changeover regulators usually have a non-return valve in each inlet, to allow you to remove one cylinder for replacement BUT it's only intended for short term use according to my caravan manual AND my service engineer, if one cylinder is to be removed for longer periods, the pigtail (gas hose) should be removed and a sealed blanking cap fitted to the unused inlet. Indeed, on my service, the engineer found a slight reverse flow gas leak on my regulator with only one cylinder fitted (quite common, and 'normal' for the valve type apparently), so fitted a blanking cap as I had no intention of replacing the second cylinder.

Cold weather can have an effect on gas depending on whether Butane or Propane.
Butane (Calor - blue bottles) is suitable for use at temperatures down to a CYLINDER temp of 2°C (a cylinder in use will be cooler than the ambient temp!), but will not work below that temperature as the liquid gas will no longer vaporise.
Propane (Calor - red bottles) will work at temperatures as low as -40°C and is therefore suitable for winter caravanning. As you have said you are using Propane, you should have no difficulties.

As to the MCB, best let BIL electrician sort that, a number of possibilities including MCB gone faulty.

I bought a small kettle thinking it would boil quicker when using it on the gas hob. I've never actually timed it but thinking about it the larger kettle has more surface area and less depth of water so I'm not so sure. I do know when we use a kettle on the BBQ it boils much much faster.

Thank you for replies.

Issues resolved!
Slow burning gas which went out quickly was caused by the regulator - mobile engineer replaced it and bingo - we have gas!

The MCD would not reset - the EHU socket into the caravan was not not pushed in firmly enough.
It needed more effort than my hands could do - we now have electrics.

Its the simple things...........

Well done for the follow up. So many postings on here just simply fade away and you never know what caused the problem.
Glad it's sorted.

Thanks, always good to hear of an outcome to a problem, and even better when satisfactorily resolved.
