Hi all, I took over my mums Hymer Nova (2002) caravan a few years ago after she passed away. I looking to do a little maintenance on it on the next few months. The blinds on the roof vents don’t roll back into themselves any more so it’s difficult to open them and have the fly screen over. Does any one know if these can be replaced ? And is it an easy job ?
Many thanks
Michelle 😊
(I’m sure I’ll have many more questions 🤦♀️)
It might be nothing more than that the roller itself needs tensioning. There will be an outer frame held up by 4 screws which need to be removed and then once removed you will see the frame complete with roller blind. Have a look for the securing points and remove them which the complete frame should be free to drop down. To tension the spring the best advice is to have a look on YouTube as there are plenty of videos on this topic which all roller blind tensioners are the same whether they are domestic blinds for the home or for a caravan. If the roller blind is deemed as not serviceable then you will have to replace the whole vent and frame which if do this you will have to clean the old sealant from the roof surface and replace with a new appropriate sealant such as Sikaflex or Seamseal CV. However, there are different size roof vents on the market but on a 2002 model they are likely to be 400 x 400 mm. square. However, they come with a flyscreen as standard but if you want a new one fitted with a roller blind then it will cost more.
Thank you, that’s very helpful. I’ll have a better look next time I’m there.
Hopefully it just needs tensioning, like you say, as it just doesn’t roll back on itself. If not I’ll leave it as it is as the other option sounds tricky and pricey 🤦♀️
You don’t say what make of blinds they are.
We replaced all 3 of ours on our previous old MH - the box frame (including new mastic tape) & the fly screen / silver blinds, as they were brittle with age and filthy beyond washing.
We got them from Leisureshopdirect
(other websites are available, but they’re very helpful).
Not expensive, fiddly rather than difficult, from memory. A job for 2 people on a dry day.
Ah thanks. I have no idea what make the blinds are. They have a fly screen attached by clipping together the blind and fly screen then it slides along but the silver blind but doesn’t roll up like it should.
No idea if that’s the same on all caravans/motor homes. I’ll look into it when I’m there next. Thanks again 😊
Have a look on leisureshopdirect before your next visit, so you can see what you’re looking out for. While you’re at the van, measure up the frames & the mesh (just to cross check sizes).
There are several threads about replacing the units.
