Hi,

We have used an AL-KO Secure Lock on our caravan wheel for a few years, like this but it's yellow:



The insert became STUCK in the wheel. We eventually got it out and it has corroded slightly.

Has anyone had experience of this and know what the best way to clean it is?

If it was me I'd be starting with a squirt of brake cleaner.
Follow up with a wire brush and some emery paper and loads of elbow grease.

The insert can get stuck if you jacked up the caravan when you fitted it (caused by slight movement of the caravan when being lowered).
Answer, obviously, is to jack it up before removal.
Otherwise, if corrosion is the cause then I would be inclined to contact Al-Ko direct.

Hi, thanks for that.
I was aware of problems after fitting when jacked-up.
Contacting AL-KO seems a difficult challenge!
However when I googled 'AL-KO Wheel Lock Maintenance' I found this useful information:


AL-KO Wheel Lock Maintenance
The design is virtually maintenance free.

Why does my barrel lock stick in the insert?
A barrel sticking is usually due to a residue on the barrel.
If this residue is red it is probably rust and you should the AL-KO Service Department on 01926 818500 for advice.
If the residue is white/grey/black then it is ‘wet storage stain’. This is zinc hydroxide and is caused by the lock being wet (due to condensation perhaps) and not drying out properly. The zinc in the coating reacts with the moisture and forms this white/grey powdery substance.
The white/grey powdery substance can be removed using a “Scotchbrite” pad – the green plastic type of pan scrubber. Rub the pad over the affected area until it is removed, then smear some water barrier grease – such as Vaseline – over the exterior of the barrel lock. This will prevent water ingress in the future.

So now I can have a go.
