Hi all

We are very new to this caravanning lark and we have just purchased our first caravan this summer

My question is regarding sterilising the water system. I have looked at videos on YouTube (thanks the Trudigans) and it all makes sense (puriclean, not milton and all that gubbins). My issue is that we live in a mid terrace house and as such are not able to carry this out at our house

Do people carry this out on their last day of caravanning of the year, at a site with the electrics hooked up, or is this poor form?

As I said we are real newbies

Cheers

I use Milton tablets. drop a couple into the clean water hog, let them dissolve for a few hours then flush through out the pipework. sink taps, bathroom taps, and shower tap.
Never had a problem....
If you can wash babies bottles out with them, I am sure you can clean a hog and a few meters of pipe.
I do this at the beginning of each season first trip out.

Don't forget to change the water filter on the caravan periodically.

👌👌👌👍

You've rather missed the point for NOT using Milton in Caravan/MH systems, it's undoubtedly safe for plastic and use on potable water systems in principle, BUT it's CORROSIVE to some of the metal components in the water heater for one, possible other metals within the system, there are springs in valves and metal tap components as well to consider. It's use will likely cause degradation to things like the heating element and heat exchanger, and boiler casing, and encourage premature failure, it may not be instantaneous failure, and you will likely get away with using it quite a few times if not left in the system too long, but the damage is being done.

Thing is, the cost of Puriclean or the like is insignificant compared with ANY damaged component in the water system, and the process of using Puriclean over Milton has no disadvantages, so really no good reason for using Milton. Puriclean also has the advantage over Milton in that it doesn't just sterilise the system, it cleans the bacteria harbouring biofilm that coats the system through normal use - it certainly seems to shift some 'gunk' out of my system when the solution is flushed out!

My Lunar caravan user manual actually advocates using Milton to sterilise the system, but comes with caveats about duration left in the system. Think it may be the only brand that did, think many specifically advise against using it.

We do ours about twice a year at a campsite, some people don't bother doing it at all, however we have a 5 year old that drinks squash like it's going out of fashion so for the 3 or 4 hours it takes to do, it's better to be safe than sorry, you would be surprised how much dirt comes out of the pipes once you flush the puriclean through

I do ours if we haven't used the caravan for a while, like others I use Puriclean, its good as not only does it sterilise but it also removes biofilm from the pipework.
You can do it at home or onsite depending on you circumstances

Because we use our camper all year round, we only thoroughly clean our 90 Lt tank with Puriclean once a year. Completely flushing it through twice. We never travel with more than 40 Lt.
