Hi All,

I've got a rotten corner on my van, which requires cutting about 20cm of the timber frame and the relevant floor area.

I'll be using soudal rv61 to bond new timber to the body but I wonder what's the proper way of joining the new timber with the current frame? Just glueing them together would not provide any structural integrity. I guess I could rip it off to the next join point but that could be a lot of healthy timber to cut and walls to rip off.

Hi and welcome to the forum. I believe a half-lap joint with a good quality wood glue and sufficient overlap on sound material would suffice.

You could try adding screws but the depth of material is not great and the last thing you want to do is puncture the outer skin.

You could join the two sections together with a flat bracket, the type shown in the link

Then joint the vertical and horizontal base section with a corner brace, the type shown in the link

Here


I think that would be the best solution to stop any movement after any bonding of the timbers.

Yes, new timber on top as original should already be bonded to the outer skin.

As for overlap, I'd say two or two and a half times the thickness of the original batten would suffice. Tango's idea is good, a bracket fitted from the sides will mean no risk from screw penetration and beef up the support.
