Couple of weeks ago I towed with the caravan handbrake on.
So new brakes, hubs, adjusters and bearings fitted by Approved Workshop.
On the way home I noticed that when I touched the brakes I could feel the van “bumping into the back of the car” like the damper had failed
I rang the engineer and he told me it was as because brakes were new and it would settle down and stop
Away in van now and it was doing it today .
Going to France in 2 weeks
Anyone else had this?
Thanks
He is a NCC Approved Workshop with 36 years experience, I don’t have any evidence yet to tell him he is wrong.
Hoping someone on here has experienced this problem.
It doesn't matter if the brake shoes are new or not. If they are set up correctly to activate close to the drum without any interference whilst in motion then the brakes should operate without feeling any bumping at the rear end from the damper. It sounds very much like that there is too much clearance between the brake shoes and inner drum surface therefore when the new brake shoes bed in it will just exacerbate the problem rather than rectify it. If the engineer is adamant that it's set up right then it might be worth getting a second opinion from an alternative service engineer and if the brakes have to be re-adjusted then get a receipt with a report and forward it to the engineer that initially serviced the caravan.
