ok.. I have come over from the other side(Tenting) and I have got myself a lovely van. Here starts the problems.... what is all this electric stuff, when the van is connected up to a hook up on site do we use 240 volt stuff in the van and if we dont use a hook up  i presume we use 12 volt gear that runs off the battery. So when you hook up does the caravan electrics automatically switch over........  Sorry to sound so dumb... but new to the van side.

Hi

I'm a newbie myself but the way I think it works is when you connect to 240v the 12v stuff stll runs off the battery but the battery is being charged by the 240v.

Does that make sense?

I think you will find this all depends the age of the caravan.  Some older van just have a 12v charger to top up the battery and these are not made to run the 12v circuit as well, they are just chargers. The new van have more of a 12v power supply that does both, it trickle charges the battery and supplies the 12v circuit.

Assuming a newer van, when on site you can use both the 240v and 12v sockets and electrical equipment when on a hook up.  When not on hookup you will only have 12 volt from the battery in the van.  Not to worry this should easily last you a weekend and you can get a week out of it, dependant on use and size/condition of the battery.

When using 240 volt equipment just be awre of how much power, amps/watts, you are using.  The normal hookup will supply a max of 10 amps berfore it will trip out.  this 10 amps is the same as 2300 watts or 2.3kw.  Rule of thumb only use one "heater" eg kettle, fan heater etc at the same time.  You can check your equipment by looking on the rating plate on the back / bottom of the equipment.

I hope this helps
