Not getting any experience in equipment section, thought I would approach you caravan guys direct. Here is my problem....I have just used my recently purchased second hand caravan for the first time. The external water pump that drops into the water container is very noisy especially if it touches the side on the water container. Is this normal or does it means it needs replacing ?...............

regards Roger

We have a similar pump, what exactly do you mean by noisey?  If there is no other noise in the van ( middle of the night) then we hear ours going. If we stand next to the Aquaroll we can hear it.  When it runs dry we can certainly hear it!  If it is touching the side of the water container it may be vibrating against it.  If it works OK then keep using it, but it is a good idea to carry a spare as it is very inconvenient if it breaks down, especially abroad or miles from the nearest dealer.

I have noticed how noisy it can be when it is dry and just as noisy well it touches the side of the container. I would relate the noise to a high and loud buzzing rather than a vibration noise. What we did was to yurn the water switch off when we were not using it.

I assume replacements just plug in so I guess carrying a spare is a good idea. It will also prove a point to me. Thanks

When you are not actually running water the pump should not be running.  If your taps are pressure operated it may be that you need to adjust the pressure setting using the little screw adjustor where the water enters the van (inside)

Thanks. I think I'm getting the plot!  Yes, the pump does run when no water taps are switched on. I will also say that the kitchen tap drips when turned off so perhaps it is a pressure problem. I don't know what adjustor you are referring too so I will have a look when I get home on friday (I work away from home 4 days a week). The shower room does not drip at the same time but the previous owner put a push switch  adjacent to the tap which I have to push on the get water - but it works okay.

If you look inside the van where the pump plugs in on the outside you should see the entry point, ours is under one of the front bunks. Ours has a little adjusting screw just there, but yours may be different. If you have a handbook it should tell you about it.   The other type of system is operated by microswitches in the taps. If one is not working correctly then I suppose it could cause the pump to keep running, but I have no experience of this type of system. I am puzzled by the "push switch" you refer to in the bathroom, is it an electrical type switch?  If so then this may point to you having a microswitch operated system , and to there being a problem with the microswitches on the bathroom taps that the previous owner didn't want to get fixed.

Make sure you put the pump into the water container BEFORE you plug it in to the van----this will vent off any air in the pump quickly, also if you have trapped air in the pump it will keep running, as the required pressure at the cut-off switch has not been reached, ----and it will be noisy-----
