Hiya,
There's nothing that would prevent you from disconnecting the battery leads when storing it, though many would prefer to hook it up to a trickle-charger so it's ready for your next trip. That said, disconnecting the leads is certainly a "belt and braces" way of ensuring no charge "leakage" in the van!
With regard to your query about the "splitter", I have heard of these but know little. I assume they simply split the power correctly from the single black socket to accommodate the grey and black leads from the van.
